The University Architect is involved with the selection, management, and mentoring of outside architects on our Capital Projects, as well as the presentation of designs to the University and the Board of Trustees. The University Architect is responsible for the consistency of campus buildings and campus building renovations; it has a major role in all campus planning activities.
The Campus Planning Office links the development of all the physical resources of the University with academic and institutional plans. The Campus Planning Office also brings together diverse groups across the campus to develop integrated and feasible planning solutions.
Position Summary:
Are you a data professional who is looking for a new leadership opportunity at a premier institution of higher education? Cornell University is seeking a seasoned facility data expert to become our Facility Information Group Manager, leading a team of drafters, archivists, and facility inventory analysts. You will serve as the chief steward for campus facilities data and assist our broader team from the University Architect’s Office and Campus Planning in supporting space planning, data management, and data integration. Within the Facilities and Campus Services Division (FCS), the Office of the University Architect (OUA) oversees the planning and design of campus buildings and landscapes, as well as the management of the facility data of record for university facilities and a facility construction archive of campus buildings. The OUA is comprised of four integrated planning and design disciplines with responsibility for the oversight and management of the long-range physical planning and design of Cornell’s buildings and landscape: Architecture, Campus Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Data Management: Facility Information Group and Geographic Information System (GIS). OUA is a cohesive group that works closely with all other units in FCS to steward the university’s campuses, ensuring the effective use of resources in the maintenance, preservation, and development of the physical environment. Additionally, the OUA team works closely with Cornell University leadership and academic units to assess and inform the planning and design of existing and new facilities to ensure their relevance, efficiency, and effectiveness in support of the University’s academic and research mission.
The Facility Information Group (FIG) Manager provides leadership and management in several specific data and record systems that house critical facility records for Cornell University. These systems include a space inventory, and a facility construction archive that has documentation of Cornell’s existing buildings and construction projects for university holdings worldwide. The FIG Manager is responsible for supervising a staff of 7 individuals who possess a broad range of technical skill sets and capabilities, from architectural drafting to information system management and data analysis to cataloging and archiving.
Cornell’s FIG Manager oversees systems and business processes that support the University’s facilities inventory data of record. This position is responsible for providing vision and leadership in data management, integrity, and accuracy of the facilities space data and archive systems.
Key Functions of the Position Include:

Serve as the primary steward of university facility space data of record.
-
Manage and oversee Cornell facilities inventory data (including space data, floor plans, record drawings, and other related documentation) so that key campus stakeholders may access this data through efficient systems, in compliance with University data policies.

Direct staff who develop facility space data, data management system, facility data analysis, and facility construction archives. Manage staff workflow to ensure timely annual data inventory cycle update and completion; data and reporting accuracy; and properly formatted data for various analyses.

Develop and maintain standard space reports that provide efficient data for frequently needed data sets for internal and external constituents for numerous campus functions, including monitoring and reporting compliance for: campus safety, research, facility management, space planning, continuity planning, and budget and resource planning.

Support institutional space reporting by administering facility inventory data system, with data provided by a network of users through a system that categorizes space, according to the University’s organizational hierarchy.

Oversee facility inventory data management policy and procedures to ensure systematic control of the creation, receipt, maintenance, and use of facility data.

Establish strong working relationships and communications across the University, including the Office of Budget and Planning, College and Unit space management staff, University Registrar, University Counsel, Division of Financial Affairs, and Facilities and Campus Services.

Manage comprehensive facility construction archiving services, including accessioning and cataloging university building-related collections (such as Real Estate and University Counsel’s Office), electronically-born construction drawing sets and supporting materials, facility manuals, historic documentation related to Cornell’s holdings.

Collaborate with Cornell Libraries to identify University Archives collection-worthy materials.

Lead the transition of the University’s space inventory system from a facility inventory system developed internally to an Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS). The FIG Manager will have the responsibility of overseeing the transition through implementation and integration of the system into office protocols, work processes, and maintenance going forward.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field related to data systems, process management, or technical equivalent, and/or a professional degree and experience in the practice of architecture with a focus on space planning.

Minimum of 5-7 years supervisory experience, successfully leading a technical staff, managing team workload, and engaging effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.

Experience working in higher education or other institutional setting with facility inventory data, floor plans, archives, and space management.
-
Experience and demonstrated leadership in overseeing data processing, reporting, and management for data of record as well as training, data reporting, and system management.
-
Experience with and clear understanding of the needs of planning and design staff within OUA and across campus who utilize space data to assess and plan physical space.

Ability to implement best practices in upholding and maintaining quality and the integrity of data of record.

Experience working with an Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS).

Working knowledge of planning, design, and construction processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Advanced-level data professional with the knowledge, expertise, and ability to serve as campus subject matter expert representing facility data of record, institutional data management, and data policy.

10 years of supervisory experience.
-
Knowledge of Federal government research reporting requirements.
-
Experience with campus planning, facility planning, and/or space planning in addition to data management.
-
Working understanding of construction documents and documentation.
-
Experience and facility with Cornell data systems, including Kuali, Facilities Inventory, Construction Archives, Oracle Analytics, and Tableau. Knowledge of CADD and Adobe Suite helpful.

Knowledge of archiving systems and/or digital documents management archiving processes and industry standards.
-
Ability to identify opportunities to: selectively integrate new data into a wholistic data record system; enhance the use of data for greater space planning efforts, space allocation, and analysis.
