Exploring attitudes towards vaccination in children and young people

University of Sheffield

About the Project

This exciting PhD opportunity enables the successful applicant to explore children and young people’s attitudes towards vaccination. The COVID-19 pandemic shone a light on public perceptions of vaccination and changing rates of vaccine hesitancy within the population. Globally, childhood and adolescent vaccination rates are variable, with LMIC countries considered to have the lowest uptake. However, high income countries have also seen changes in their childhood and adolescent vaccination rates and in the UK rates are considered to be suboptimal. Low, or declining, uptake of routine vaccinations have wide ranging health, social and economic implications.

Taking a child and youth centred approach to research, this PhD proposal creates an important opportunity to learn from children and young people about their perspectives and understandings of vaccination. We welcome candidates to consider exploring the issues from a UK or a global perspective and to research children and young people across the age categories, or to focus on one particular population i.e. primary school children.

The supervisory team is composed of Dr Katie Ellis (Senior Lecturer in Child Welfare) and Dr Jill Thompson (Senior Lecturer in Global Health and Wellbeing). Both are based in the Faculty of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield. This project offers a unique opportunity to explore a contemporary issue that is certain to have future relevance for policy and practice. This is a study with potentially much impact.

We invite applications from students with a background in social sciences or health with a first degree (or at least a 2:1) with a good fundamental knowledge of qualitative research methods. If you would like more information about the project, please contact
