Molecular Biology and Genetics is one of the largest science departments on campus and the work of our faculty relies on a variety of specialized equipment. We are looking for someone who has experience and a proven track record of being able to fix equipment that contains electronics (including microcontrollers and electronic logic boards on the component level) and hydraulics components. Also, knowledge of thermodynamics is needed. Under the supervision of the Technical Services Supervisor II, this position will support the research activities of the Molecular Biology and Genetics Department and several related departments through the design, modification and maintenance of, training in the use of, and field deployment of a variety of research lab equipment. The equipment and services are primarily, but not limited to, spectrophotometers, PCR machines, power supplies, computers, LCD projectors, vacuum pumps, centrifuges, incubators, shakers, microscopes, UV and visible light sources, various microcontrollers, firmware updates, and software updates.
This position is part time, 20 hours per week and is benefits eligible. This position will work 100% on campus and must adhere to all COVID-19 protocols and procedures.

   

Required Qualifications: Trade/Vocational/Technical School and 4 – 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrading and overhaul, and ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. Must be able to occasionally lift heavy loads (50 lbs.) and be capable of physical exertion for short intervals.  Basic machining and surface mount soldering techniques knowledge necessary.  Familiarity with test equipment such as signal generators, meters, oscilloscopes, universal T memory programmers and other digital instruments, is needed.  Strong interpersonal skills needed to interact effectively with diverse staff, students and faculty in conducting daily workplace duties.  Requires ability to multi-task and ability to work under varied working conditions.  Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, effective writing and strong organizational skills.  Must have ability to learn device-specific functions and their meaning and importance. Equipment requires safety precautions.  Protective devices may be necessary.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated troubleshooting success in a wide variety of systems (electrical, electronic, mechanical); good mechanical intuition; comfortable with electro-mechanical systems. Ability to work independently.
