EPSRC iCASE: Multimodal benchmark data synthesis and co-modelling of the energy distribution edge network

University of Birmingham

About the Project

This is an iCASE funded PhD project with Siemens with the intention to spend a minimum of 3 months seconded to Siemens in Munich, Germany during the PhD. The University of Birmingham project supervisor is Dr Grant Wilson, who leads the Energy Systems and Data Group and the Siemens supervisor is Dr Paul Stursberg of Siemens.

The goal of the project is to investigate novel, unconventional publicly available information (e.g., social media complaints) in combination with existing data sources (e.g, OpenStreetMap) to construct an open-source benchmark data platform for multimodal distribution networks. The platform will integrate a consistent set of realistic demand profile data for electricity and other sectors (e.g., space heating), with synthetic, geo-referenced models of multimodal subnetworks (e.g., electricity + district heating) and provide an interface to enable further analysis.

A use-case enabled by this platform is the design of multimodal network infrastructure (e.g., electricity and heat). In this context, the project will also investigate how this can be achieved using existing tools for simulation and design, e.g., via interfaces for co-simulation in PSS SINCAL. The benchmark data platform will provide a sufficient number and diversity of validated subnetwork models and profile data to evaluate their performance.

Experience in python programming is an distinct advantage
