EPSRC DTP funded Chemistry PhD: Taking photocatalysis for a spin. Magnetic field and isotope effects on the reactivity of semiconductor materials for solar-to-chemical energy conversion

About the Project

A PhD position is available for a research project aimed at addressing the transition to clean and sustainable energy and chemical production.

The project will focus on semiconductor materials for solar-to-chemical energy conversion and will explore how magnetism and microwaves can improve the efficiency of the chemical reactions that these materials catalyse when irradiated with sunlight. The project aims to establish new fundamental understanding of charge and spin transfer processes in semiconductors, that will be applied to practical applications such as producing green hydrogen and sustainable fuels, hence creating value for society, ethically and responsibly.

Position at the intersection between chemistry, physics, and engineering, this studentship will form a modern-day researcher who possesses a robust foundation in fundamental scientific principles, coupled with the aptitude to innovate and translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions, i.e., a professional capable of bridging molecular insights with macroscopic system designs to address complex real-world challenges in material science, energy conversion, and sustainable technology development. The close interaction with social and environmental scientists and external collaborators and stakeholders will allow the Student to become a highly employable scientist capable of anticipating, reflecting and engaging on the wider ethical and societal impacts of their work, thus adding much value to the graduate attributes.

Studying and research environment

You will be part of a vibrant, diverse, inclusive, and supportive research community that blooms with intellectual stimulation, supported by state-of-the-art facilities at the new Translational Research Hub within the School of Chemistry’s Cardiff Catalysis Institute (Dr. Andrea Folli, Dr. Emma Richards) Cardiff Catalysis Institute – Cardiff University and the Institute of Compound Semiconductors (Dr. Bo Hou) Institute for Compound Semiconductors – Cardiff University TRH forms part of Cardiff University’s £600m investment in the University’s future and contains state-of-the-art synthetic, preparative and characterisation laboratories; unique reactor and photocatalytic testing facilities; cutting-edge photoelectrochemical facilities; as well as advanced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy suite, and a bespoke electron microscopy suite with aberration-corrected STEM.

You will also collaborate with the School of Geography and Planning (Prof. Gillian Bristow) who have long-term experience studying the challenges for renewable energy development in Wales.

Training

You will receive technical training on the key areas of your main research programme, i.e., semiconductor materials, photoelectrochemistry, and advanced magnetic resonance spectroscopy. You will be supported to develop compassionate leadership and personal development on the principles of inclusive research culture, via, e.g., programmes of the GW4 Alliance, RSC, Health Education Improvement Wales (HEIW), and others, who will also help to develop assertive communication, motivation, methods to manage conflict, and freedom in decision making.

About the candidate

You should hold or expect to gain a first-class degree or a good 2.1 and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in chemistry or physics

In addition, proven expertise in Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and/or associated hyperfine spectroscopies on semiconductor materials is required

You are interested in green chemistry and catalysis to transition to a more equitable, greener, and circular economy. Capitalising on the principles of a more equitable society you will also work to foster a more inclusive, equitable and diverse STEM landscape. You will advocate for initiatives that advance sustainable solutions whilst engaging and elevating underrepresented minorities and bridging the existing gender and racial gaps to propel a diverse team of innovators poised to tackle the multifaceted challenges of our era.

This studentship is structured to ensure a comprehensive educational experience, and you will be committed and trained to analyse the socioeconomic and environmental impacts that arise from your research, to deliver more responsible and impactful research and innovation. Via the newly established Net Zero Innovation Institute at Cardiff University Net Zero Innovation Institute – Cardiff University you will also address the needs and expectations of stakeholders; and contribute to building public trust in research endeavours.

Other Desirable Criteria:

·      knowledge/experience in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.

·      Knowledge/experience in semiconductor photocatalysis.

·      Knowledge/experience in electrochemistry.

·      Experience in addressing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for promoting positive change in STEM and the wider society.
