Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY COORDINATOR, Biological Engineering (BE)/Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE)/Center for Environmental Health Sciences (CEHS), to monitor and oversee day-to-day operational activities in BE, DMSE, and CEHS and interdepartmental labs/centers to ensure compliance with EHS laws and regulations and MIT’s EHS management system (EHS-MS).  Responsibilities will include recognizing and understanding EHS issues; checking that DLC personnel receive the appropriate EHS training; conducting inspections/audits of labs and facilities; checking that the registration and hazard potential inventory system is being kept current; disseminating information about the EHS-MS; serving as liaison with MIT’s EHS Office; responding to or serving as a communications link during emergencies; serving as chemical hygiene officer for each DLC; assisting with developing emergency preparedness plans; providing special training and seminars; ensuring laboratories’ EHS representatives are aware of roles/responsibilities and holding regular meetings with them; and participating on Institute-wide working committees and other projects.  


Job Requirements
REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree in EHS-related discipline, engineering, science, and/or related professional discipline; four years’ relevant experience; working knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local EHS regulations; excellent organizational, administrative, and problem-solving skills; self-motivation; flexibility; ability to multitask, set and achieve priorities, follow through on tasks, work in teams,  motivate groups, and function effectively in a fast-paced work environment with changing priorities and limited supervision; attention to detail and accuracy; diplomacy, tact, and good judgment; bias for action; organizational awareness; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and ability to learn specialized EHS computer applications; and strong interpersonal skills for working with students/staff/faculty on managing the EHS system, solving problems, and the EHS aspects of developing new experiments/technologies. PREFERRED

:  master’s degree and professional certification in an EHS field (CIH, CHMM, CSP, etc.). Job #22100-9
