Pay Grade/Pay Range:  M5 Monthly (exempt): – Minimum – $ 61,131.20 Midpoint – $ 106,995.20

Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings, weekends, & holidays required

Job Summary: The Engineer III provides technical assistance in engineering matters, reviews outsourced construction documents, provides construction documents for in-house projects, reviews and comments on construction work, and maintains University Design Standards for the university community. May provide oversight or supervision over other staff. May serve as project lead.

Additional Department Summary: The Electrical Power Distribution Engineer provides electrical engineering support to the University. Ensures the operational integrity of electrical systems and electrical maintenance programs. Designs, installs, operates, and maintains medium voltage power distribution systems, electrical substations, secondary/low voltage electrical systems, metering systems, lighting systems, emergency electrical systems, and electrical control systems. Develops and implements long term master plans, strategies, goals, objectives, and targets related to the campus electrical systems. Provides engineering support and assistance for campus events.

Performs a full range of electrical engineering functions requiring an extensive knowledge of both medium voltage electrical distribution systems (46 KV and 12,470 volt) and facilities related electrical systems (4,160 volts and below) under limited direction. Provides technical expertise, direction, oversight, and coordination of all activities required to design, install, operate, maintain, and repair the University’s electrical power distribution systems. Assists with the development, and implementation of electrical power distribution Operation and Maintenance strategies. Develops electrical plans standards, design criteria, single line diagrams, equipment specifications, and scopes of work. Implements management systems to maintain those standards and specifications. Conducts electrical engineering studies, load studies, design calculations, protective device coordination analysis, fault current calculations, arc flash analysis, power quality analysis, and various other engineering reports. Develops and analyzes electrical power distribution system modeling. Evaluates and analyzes the current state of electrical components and systems on campus. Identifies and implements opportunities to improve maintenance and reliability of the campus electrical systems. Provides electrical engineering support during construction and renovation projects by reviewing equipment submittals, drawings, and responding to request for information from contractors. Inspects construction and renovation projects to ensure adherence to specifications and quality workmanship. Assists with the development of long-term electrical power supply requirements, strategies, and campus master plans. Supervises, directs and/or coordinates the work of other engineers, skilled tradesmen, and designers.

Must be willing to work long and/or unusual hours to include nights and weekends depending on the schedule of campus events.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and seven (7) years of professional work experience in the design, operation, and maintenance of medium voltage electrical power distribution systems.

Must have an active Professional Engineer (PE) license. Applicants with an active non-Alabama PE license will be considered, but must obtain a State of Alabama PE license within six (6) months of employment.

Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Good interpersonal, analytical, and (written and verbal) communication skills required to build relationships with both team members and a diverse customer base, to solve problems, resolve issues and determine effective solutions. Basic accounting skills.

Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot blueprints, schematics, and plans and do material takeoffs. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and with a diverse population. Ability to organize work and time in an efficient manner and the ability to initiate and support continuous improvement methodologies. Ability to perform on-site inspections. Ability to lift, handle, and maneuver the tools, materials, and supplies of the job.

Comprehensive understanding of Facilities related maintenance processes including a wide-ranging knowledge of the means and methods, tools, materials, and equipment used by electrical maintenance. Strong knowledge of the National Electrical Codes and all other appropriate NFPA codes pertaining to electrical design, operation, and maintenance. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office and other computer management systems.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Proficiency in AutoCAD and electrical power distribution system modeling software.
