Electronics and Software Engineer

We are looking for an Electronics and Software Engineer to provide electronics and software engineering support for research programmes in basic and clinical neuroscience at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN, John Radcliffe Hospital Campus). Together with scientists in these institutes, you will develop and implement devices to monitor and manipulate neuronal tissue to advance understanding of the brain and produce novel therapeutic strategies for brain disorders. This position will require knowledge, experience and technical competence across a broad range of electronics and software areas to support electrophysiological recording/stimulation experiments in rodents and humans. You will adapt commercially available equipment and design and implement custom circuits and apparatus to facilitate these experiments. Two specific areas of focus will be custom-designed experimental set ups to record biopotentials from rodents performing complex motor tasks and the implementation of “closed-loop” interfaces to deliver electrical and sensory stimuli at specific times in relation to ongoing brain activity.

You will be expected to work using your own initiative and must be capable of liaising with staff, students and collaborators at all levels. The duties and responsibilities of the post-holder are focused on providing engineering resources to support research projects at WIN and MRC BNDU, and you will divide your time between BNDU in Mansfield Road, the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (WIN, John Radcliffe Hospital Campus) and the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME, Old Road Campus)

The successful candidate will hold a degree or equivalent in an engineering related discipline (a neuroscience related discipline may suffice, with relevant experience) and will have experience of electronic device design, construction and fault finding. They will also have knowledge of both digital and analogue circuitry, be familiar with both high- and low-level programming languages (e.g. Python, Matlab, Java/C# and C) and have experience in CAD and 3D printing.

Experience in digital circuit design in Verilog for deployment in FPGAs, of working in neuroscience, of working in an academic environment and of working with closed-loop systems is desirable.

The post is fixed term for 2 years in the first instance.

Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 7th November 2022 will be considered.

Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
