Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Wild Ontario, the Education Coordinator will facilitate education both off and on campus. This involves public education and outreach in all forms – including but not limited to program design and delivery, client correspondence, marketing, and social media – as well as supporting our experiential learning volunteer program and internships, facilitating guest appearances/lectures on campus and more.

The Education Coordinator also plays a supportive role in our animal care and training program, and assists the Manager, Wild Ontario with other tasks as required.

This position has built-in flex time, as duties may fall outside of standard business hours on a regular basis. It also involves physical activities such as: lifting large animal carriers, holding a bird on glove for long periods of time, working outside in all weather conditions. It also involves driving to offsite programs.

Requirements

  • A 3-year college diploma in Wildlife or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years prior working experience working with raptorial birds, in environmental education or a related field
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with a diverse audience.
  • A strong background in the development and delivery of educational programming and materials for all ages and demographics.
  • Strong public speaking abilities
  • A familiarity with a variety of education styles and techniques.
  • A good working knowledge of the ecology and natural history of the province of Ontario.
  • A strong foundation in avian training using contemporary training methods
  • A practical understanding of the husbandry and health maintenance of raptorial birds in an educational setting
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to manage teams of volunteers
  • Scheduling and time management skills
  • Computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, social media, graphic design and website maintenance
  • A valid Ontario drivers’ license of G level or above

Additional requirements include:

  • The Education Coordinator must have ample prior experience delivering education programs to audiences of all types, ages and sizes and must be an excellent public speaker. They must be prepared to adapt and lead groups of volunteers, interns and staff in any and all public education settings/scenarios.
  • Knowledge and experience to set team up for success when liaising with clients/external partners and to multitask delivering the best possible client experience while providing learning opportunities for volunteers, interns and staff while managing a wide variety of potential risks.
  • The Education Coordinator must also have a solid foundation in raptor husbandry and training with the skills required to train new animal ambassadors using positive reinforcement and to be responsible for any animal health/training challenges that may arise.
  • Additionally, a new hire must demonstrate the experience, knowledge and confidence to provide hands-on and theoretical animal health/training learning opportunities to volunteers, interns and staff.
  • Experience with volunteer team management is also an asset.
  • Familiarity with the University environment and policies, especially Animal Care policies, will be preferred.
