About the Position
The Land Stewardship Specialist, located in Black Earth and/or Deforest, Wisconsin, will conduct natural area stewardship work on properties throughout southwest and south-central Wisconsin.

Restoration activities through the spring and summer months include prescribed burning, invasive weed treatments (hand-pulling, herbicide application, mowing) and installing native trees, shrubs, and plants. In the fall and winter months restoration activities focus on invasive brush and tree removal. Training will be provided in all aspects of the job including ecological restoration concepts, native and invasive plant identification, and safe and proper use of herbicide application equipment, mowers, and power tools. Training is available to obtain a Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator’s License and Basic Chainsaw Safety certification.

Work hours are generally 35-45 hours per week.

Requirements for All Land Stewardship Specialist Positions
Work safely at all times
Work effectively, both independently and as part of a team
Identify native and invasive trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants
Hold a valid driver’s license
Drive company vehicles to and from job sites and have DOT certification within 60 days of hire
Operate off-road vehicles including 4-wheel drive truck, compact tractor, skidsteer, ATV
Perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods
Work outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, full sun
Work in difficult environments including rough terrain, wet ground, thick brush, brambles, and insects.
Use maps and aerial photos, and portable GPS units, to determine location and work area boundaries
Maintain awareness of location and compass directions in remote sites
Perform basic maintenance and field repairs on equipment
Communicate status of projects to Crew Leader
Be available for occasional overnight travel at company’s expense (up to 5 nights/month in some seasons)

Land Stewardship Specialist – Invasive Species Control
Qualifications
Certified as a Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator, or ability to become certified within 30 days
Duties
Apply herbicides by cut stump, basal bark, and spot spray application
Coordinate with other crew members to achieve thorough coverage of the treatment area
Document amount of herbicide used
Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of spray equipment
Mix herbicide solutions to proper concentrations
Dispense herbicide mixtures to application equipment
Clean herbicide containers and application equipment

Land Stewardship Specialist – Tree and Brush Removal
Qualifications
Completed Level 1 chain saw safety training: FISTA, Game of Logging, USFS, or equivalent. Coming in to saw months, the ideal candidate will already have a safety certification listed above and have some chainsaw experience.
Duties
Cut trees and brush using hand tools, power brush saw, and chain saw
Fell trees using directional felling techniques
Perform basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of chainsaws and other equipment
Move cut material by hand or by skidding or grappling using a tractor or skidsteer
Pile cut material and burn brush piles
Operate a wood chipper

Land Stewardship Specialist – Prescribe Burning
Qualifications
Completed wildland firefighter training FFT2 (minimum S-130/190, S131)- preferred candidate has the class and some burn experience. Candidate must have completed the class prior to April burn season to be able to be part of the burn crews.

Duties
Follow direction from line boss and perform activities in a squad that consists of 2 to 8 Prescribed Burn Technicians/Specialist, under direction of Burn Leader, to execute prescribed burns in grassland and woodland areas. Able to perform ignition and suppression duties your line boss assigns, along with being able to use fire equipment, pumper units, drive ATV/UTV’s, etc. Able to walk for long periods of time on different landscapes, be exposed to smoky environments, able to carry 45lbs of water in a back-can for long periods of time, and communicate effectively with team members using chain of command system through in person and over the radio communications.

Compensation
Starting Wage: $16+/hr based on previous experience and qualifications
Overtime paid over 40 hours in a week.
Full-time Permanent positions are contingent on a 60-day probationary period and receive the following benefits:
Full-Time Permanent Employees receive:

amounts based on position and time at Quercus (100 hours first year, 120 hours years 1-5)

• Boot/Gear Reimbursement – Up to $300 annually
• OnXhunt Membership – Crew Leaders and above eligible for reimbursement
• Volunteer Time – Up to 20 hours per year paid volunteering
• Professional Development PTO – 40 hours per year and $250 in course fees
• Paid Parental Leave
• Sabbatical – Earned after 5 years of Full-Time Permanent employment
Two weeks paid vacation to travel to an area of conservation importance
Fun presentation about sabbatical to company upon return.
Eligible for Sabbatical at 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th anniversaries
Ability to increase wage based on additional certifications and longevity
