KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology
We are looking for a PhD student to develop and apply antibody-based, multiplexed imaging tools to build high-dimensional protein maps of human tissues. The project focuses specifically on molecular and spatial analyses of human samples and tissues to identify pathophysiological mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease. This position includes work e.g. with tissue sample preparation and sectioning, antibody-based assays, highly-multiplexed microscopy, computational image analysis and statistics.
In this project you will learn, combine and apply cutting-edge tools in proteomics and spatial omics to contribute to the development of biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases. You will collaborate with other research groups that develop complementary spatial omics methods (in situ sequencing, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics), and machine learning approaches to model spatial multi-omics data.
The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally, we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible. The placement for this PhD position will be at Science for Life Laboratory (http://www.scilifelab.se), a national centre for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research.
Supervision: Prof. Emma Lundberg (KTH & Stanford Univ.) and Dr. Burcu Ayoglu (KTH) are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
What we offer
Admission requirements
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
A suitable background for this position would be a Master’s degree e.g. in Biomedicine, Molecular Life Sciences, Neurobiology or similar.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
Selection
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
Previous laboratory experience with the techniques listed under Project Description, especially immunofluorescence microscopy, are meriting, as well as programming skills. A relevant degree project experience e.g. in neuroscience, omics, immunology or similar is a particularly advantageous qualification.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
