KTH Royal Institute of Technology

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Applied and computational mathematics, machine learning, mathematical statistics.

The Department of Mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology seeks applicants for a PhD student position in Applied and Computational Mathematics for a project on random matrices and AI.

The project will study random matrix models and relate these to various phenomena in Machine Learning and the study of neural networks. Natural questions in random matrix theory are the study of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The area is rich. The eigenvalues typically form a Coulomb gas, where the eigenvalues interact in accordance with Coulomb’s law. The random matrix case corresponds to a specific value of the thermodynamical temperature of the gas, but other temperatures are also of fundamental interest. The instance when the temperature approaches 0 gives crystallization. This phenomenon is poorly understood but deserves further study, at least in simple canonical cases. Here, numerical simulation may help to formulate appropriate hypotheses.

You are expected to develop own ideas and communicate scientific results both orally and in writing.

Supervision: Prof. Håkan Hedenmalm is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
