Doctoral Research Fellowship in ninteenth-century Norwegian literature (ref 232619)

The PhD fellow will take part in the European Research Council-funded project “Norwegian Romantic Nationalisms” (NORN) , led by Ellen Rees. NORN seeks to uncover both the affective and ideological dynamics of romantic nationalism, examining how collective emotions related to the idea of the nation were harnessed, activated, and constructed through literature and theater, using Norway as a case study. NORN forges a highly innovative approach combining cultural studies, affect theory, critical race studies, and reception studies with qualitative methods taken from literary studies and history as well as quantitative methods from the digital humanities. This PhD fellowship will be connected to work package 1 within the project and will be supervised by the project leader. The successful candidate’s dissertation project will contribute to the larger aims of NORN through its respective case study.

The PhD fellow will be expected to apply a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to the literary historiographical question of how, or indeed whether, it is possible to delineate a definitive Norwegian “National Romantic” canon. The successful candidate should discuss possible methods and approaches to this problem in the project description.
