Functions: PhD Candidates

About the SnT
SnT is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services. We play an instrumental role
in Luxembourg by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting
highly qualified talent.

The group works across the entire spectrum of blue-sky research and applied research to conceive and demonstrate future communication paradigms.
Researchers with an interest in terrestrial and non-terrestrial communication systems, will find a large and vibrant team of over 70 members fostering a
collaborative atmosphere. SIGCOM’s state-of-the art facilities include 4 physical laboratories: the Software-Defined Networking Lab, the Communications
Lab and the 5G Space Communication Lab – dedicated environments for researchers to test their results on advanced equipment, in addition to the SATCOM
Lab of the Interdisciplinary Space Master. The group is also the recipient of numerous awards, such as the European Association for Signal Processing
(EURASIP) Group Technical Achievement Award, the IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Contributions to Satellite Communications Award, as well as 4
European Research Council grants.

Your Role
The SIGCOM group within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) has an open Ph.D. position as part of the recently EU
granted project AVATAR (digitAl twin for transformatiVe Air vehicle with ioT sensors towards sAfeR skies).

AVATAR project has the goal to create a Digital Twin by continuously monitoring the operation of transformative air vehicles (TAV) through an innovative
smart IoT sensing skin, informed by accurate physical models and advanced analytics, resulting in reduced direct operative costs, extended service life
and safer skies. In this context, one of the main project axes that will be investigated is the ultra-reliable intra-avionic wireless communication
systems. These latter have been hardly adopted in aviation where most intra-avionic connectivity relies on wired technologies. The raison is that current
wireless technologies are not able to support the diversified requirements (e.g. reliability, energy efficiency, resilience to interference) for various
air vehicle applications.

An important aspect of this research is to investigate the current and future efforts of the standardization bodies (e.g. 3GPP and IEEE), to support
wireless intra-aircraft communication and its requirements, and what extensions and modifications are required to satisfy them. The proposed techniques
will be validated using simulations and experiments, when needed.

The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks:

* Contribute to the EU project “digitAl twin for transformatiVe Air vehicle with ioT sensors towards sAfeR skies- AVATAR”
* Carry out research in the predefined areas
* Disseminate results through scientific publications
* Present results in well-known international conferences and workshops
* Generation of technical contributions for standardization bodies

Your Profile
The candidate should possess an M.Sc./M.Eng. Degree in Telecommunication Engineering, signal processing, or a closely related field in Electronic,
Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The candidate should have some knowledge and experience in some of the following topics:

* Background in wireless and mobile communications
* Good understanding of network implementation and operation aspects
* Interest in combining theory and experiments and well-developed analytic skills
* Development skills in MATLAB and/or C/C++ are required
* Exposure to 3GPP, IEEE and ISO/EPC standards
* Hands-on experience with RF circuits is desirable

Programming skills: MATLAB, C, C++

Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are required

Here’s what awaits you at SnT
* A stimulating learning environment. Here post-docs and professors outnumber PhD students. That translates into access and close collaborations with
some of the brightest ICT researchers, giving you solid guidance
* Exciting infrastructures and unique labs. At SnT’s two campuses, our researchers can take a walk on the moon at the LunaLab, build a nanosatellite,
or help make autonomous vehicles even better
* The right place for IMPACT. SnT researchers engage in demand-driven projects. Through our Partnership Programme, we work on projects with more than
55 industry partners
* Multiple funding sources for your ideas. The University supports researchers to acquire funding from national, European and private sources
* Competitive salary package. The University offers a 12 month-salary package, over six weeks of paid time off, meal vouchers and health insurance
* Be part of a multicultural family. At SnT we have more than 60 nationalities. Throughout the year, we organise team-building events, networking
activities and more
* Boost your career. Students can take advantage of several opportunities for growth and career development, from free language classes to career
