About the opportunity

The Director of Strategic Planning will work under broad direction from the Vice-President (Strategy) to lead a best practice Strategic Planning Office. The position has leadership responsibilities to contribute to decision-making within the Portfolio and will operate with a considerable degree of autonomy.

The position will guide, develop and manage a team of professional staff, including managing performance and development, and for the delegation of work activity. The incumbent will apply extensive professional judgement to make-day-today decisions where policy exists, as well as in areas where it does not, exercising independent judgement and significant decision-making autonomy.

About you

The Director of Strategic Planning will lead a centre of excellence for strategy design in a university context – providing best practice strategy design approaches and strategic insights to support the University, and its constituent parts, in achieving our aspirations. This role will provide high level leadership and expertise to guide the University Executive and senior leaders to identify and make strategic choices. The Director must collaborate across the University to ensure coherence from the University-wide Strategic Plan through to local plans, and guide decision-making in a way that aligns to the University-wide strategy. They must be able to effectively design and facilitate the strategic planning conversations and creative design sessions across the University to enable the delivery of the outcomes of the University’s Strategy. The Director will also be a point of advice to the University Executive as it relates to the ongoing performance and achievement of the Strategy. To do this requires the ability to secure the trust of senior stakeholders, possess the expertise of service delivery in relation to strategic planning, and exhibit excellent leadership qualities.

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead a best practice Strategic Planning office including the design and application of strategy tools, techniques, and related business processes.
  • Design and facilitate regular University Executive, Senate and senior leadership group workshops in support of the strategy design and ongoing evaluation.
  • Oversee the provision of strategic research to inform the review and (re)prioritisation of strategies and identification of new strategies.
  • Lead the provision of guidance and support to members of the University Executive and senior leaders in strategy design, review and regular prioritisation of (new and existing) strategies and initiatives including articulating trade-off implications from a strategic perspective.
  • Partner with senior leaders across Faculties and Portfolios to develop a deep understanding of their needs and requirements as it relates to services provided by Strategic Planning.
  • Ensure that services provided by Strategic Planning to the University community meet the needs of clients and are of the highest quality

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
