The Strategic Partnerships & Capacity Building unit within the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) has a mandate to work collaboratively with campus partners to action university commitments to equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence, which are articulated in a number of institutional strategies (e.g., Inclusion Action Plan, Anti-Racism & Inclusive Excellence Recommendations, Indigenous Strategic Plan, Employment Equity Plan, etc.). The team provides strategic implementation advice and support to mobilize and sustain the integration of equity, antiracism, and inclusive excellence principles and practices across organizational ecosystems, with the goal of building capacity for individual and systems change.

The Director, Strategic Partnerships & Capacity Building (SPCB) is responsible for engaging both the Vancouver and Okanagan communities by leading a team of strategists to:

  • Advise on and support cross-campus development and implementation, strategies to action Departmental, Faculty, and University commitments to equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence. 

  • Create and curate on-line and in-person educational resources, develop and leverage tools to guide best practices, and design and deliver transformative equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence curriculum and programming to support and sustain individual and organizational development through tailored and train-the-trainer (ToT) workshops (synchronous and asynchronous) and other educational opportunities.   

  • Facilitate fora for historically marginalized campus communities and affinity groups to come together to make meaningful social and professional connections, to engage in informal networking and mentorship with one another, and to provide insights and feedback to inform university efforts to advance equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence.  

Organizational Status

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion (AVPEI), the Director, SPCB is a member of the Leadership Team within the Equity and Inclusion Office.

This position works closely with other Directors under the purview of the AVPEI and with administrative and academic leadership. Significant partnerships include: academic and administrative units, Human Resources, Faculty Relations, First Nations House of Learning, Student Services, the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology, Student Government.

Work Performed

  • Drives the development of strategic priority areas for the Office and contributes to the development of strategic institutional plans by promoting a strategic approach to effectively engage and support departments and units across campus enact and advance equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence commitments

  • Provides leadership for and participates in the development of organizational and systems change strategies that promote equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence in across unit ecosystems

  • Develops unit budget and contributes to deliberations about the Office’s long term strategic budgetary decisions

  • Leads unit adoption of change efforts and contributes to broader organizational development and change management efforts

  • Develops unit goals, defines measures of progress, and leads teams in aligning their day-to-day activities with strategic priorities in support of the Office’s and university’s vision, values and purpose. This including leading and overseeing the development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of progress on initiatives.

  • Provides exemplary leadership in the establishment and management of a professional and collegial team dynamic and working environment. Leads the SPCB team. This includes hiring, managing performance, supervising, fostering team wellbeing, providing mentorship and employee growth.

  • Works in close collaboration with other Office Directors to advise the AVPEI on issues related to advancing institutional equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence plans

  • Partners and collaborates with senior management and key stakeholders to advance transformative strategies, policies, and practices for systems change. Assesses and develops a plan to build capacity among leadership, faculty, staff, and students to enact equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence commitments

  • Initiates invitations and responds to requests for strategic partnerships, defines terms of partnership agreement, facilitates positive relationships within partnerships established

  • Leads the development of a framework for strategic and sustainable education for individual and organizational development within departments and units, which informs the implementation of education and training initiatives

  • Cultivates, builds, and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including University departments and Faculties, key student groups, and other relevant service providers and community organizations on and off campus.

  • Oversees initiatives aimed at facilitating fora for historically marginalized campus communities and affinity groups to come together to make meaningful social and professional connections, to engage in informal networking and mentorship with one another, and to provide insights and feedback to inform university efforts to advance equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence. 

  • Networks with community organizations, professional organizations, post-secondary educational institutions within shared communities of practice. 

  • Leads the development of reports, publications and other written work as required. 

  • Regularly and actively engages in critical reflection and dialogue (both individually and as a team member) about equity, anti-racism, and inclusive excellence and models the implementation of social justice principles in the workplace. 

  • Participates on University and departmental committees as related to justice, equity and inclusion, as required

  • Represents the EIO and the AVPEI by communicating with tact and discretion on matters of a highly sensitive nature to all levels of students, faculty, and staff

  • Elevates issues emerging from campus community affinity groups to the AVPEI

  • Leads special projects and initiatives within the EIO as required.

  • Performs other responsibilities and related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors can have significant negative impacts on the achievement of UBC’s strategic goals and commitments related to diversity, equity and inclusion, and UBC’s reputation.
 

Supervision Received

The Director works independently, with a wide latitude to effectively execute their unit leadership and management responsibilities, and with sound judgement to determine when to consult and engage the Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion on matters requiring senior level vision and direction.

Supervision Given
This position oversees the Strategic Partnerships & Capacity Building team, which includes staff on both Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. 
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master’s degree preferred or relevant graduate terminal degree. Minimum of eight years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with accessibility, human rights and employment equity legislation. 

  • Knowledge, training or equivalent (from academic, professional, and/or lived experience) in principles, theories, and practices related to advancing social justice

  • Ability to lead systems change initiatives and managing change using strategic planning, evaluation, and assessment skills as well as evidence-based decision making. 

  • Ability to lead and manage a diverse team in a complex and decentralized organization (experience in post-secondary institution is an asset)

  • Ability to build manage, and maintain high-quality and productive relationships with stakeholders and rights holders in a complex environment.

  • Ability to build positive and productive intra- and inter-group relations within and across diverse populations with superior knowledge and skills that demonstrate intercultural fluency.

  • Ability to effectively employing group facilitation and dialogue skills, informed by a strong ethic of care and deep understanding of how socio-historic power relations inform individual biases, systemic inequities, and group dynamics.

  • Ability to effectively lead the development and delivery of education and training curricula and programs

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills,

  • Demonstrated management and organizational planning abilities, including project management, ability to multitask and work to timelines under pressure. 

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, tact and discretion.
