Job Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Government Affairs and Strategic Partnerships, the Director of Tribal Relations will lead strategic engagement opportunities, special projects and initiatives for the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the Native Nations of Wisconsin and affiliated organizations.
The position serves as the primary contact and resource on behalf of campus leadership and is charged with creating and managing a collaborative effort to improve the structure through which UW-Madison and tribal governments communicate on matters of shared concern.
The Director of Tribal Relations will create opportunities to strengthen relationships and facilitate communication with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and Native Nations across the state.

Responsibilities: Represents the organization’s position on legislation and regulatory affairs to elected representatives and their staffs, as well as to officials and staffs in regulatory and other agencies, in support of institutional vision and goals.
  • 10% Monitors legislative actions that affect institutional activity and make recommendations for policies and procedures to align with legal requirements and applicable laws
  • 10% Formulates recommendations and prepares reports based on analysis of quantitative and qualitative data
  • 25% Delivers directed messaging on institutional priorities to internal and governmental stakeholders
  • 5% Represents the institution among governmental stakeholder groups providing organizational information
  • 25% Identifies, promotes, and maintains internal and external partnerships to build relationships and represent the interests of the institution
  • 5% Advances the institution’s interests at the state and/or federal level and shares policy and funding developments that may impact institutional missions
  • 20% Cultivates partnerships with Indigenous nations and affiliated organizations.

Required
Bachelor’s Degree

Qualifications:

Required:
– 5 years of professional work with Native Nations or on Native Nations issues.
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
– Ability to work independently.
Preferred:
– Understanding of and experience working with Native Nations communities.
– An individual who is recognized as a partner by tribal communities of Wisconsin or will be able to quickly develop relationships with the twelve American Indian Nations of Wisconsin.
– Ability and understanding of Native Nations Governance and Sovereignty and ability to work with
diverse tribes.
– Familiarity with UW-Madison and higher education.

Full Time: 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $97,600 ANNUAL (12 months)
