General Notes
Primary work location is in the heart of the UT campus in the iconic Gregory Gym. Must be eligible to work in the U.S. on a full-time, ongoing, basis for any employer without sponsorship. Additional hours frequently required. Continuously maintain and adhere to the department’s Vision, Mission, Values and Performance Standards. Position is exempt Administrative & Professional, and subject to UT’s HOP 1-1020, Officers of Administration.

Purpose
Serve in a key leadership role in the department and provide administrative oversight of the Programs area. Provide assessment of overall efficiency and effectiveness of programs and services, and implement strategic solutions as needed to ensure support of the vision, mission, and values of Recreational Sports.
Responsibilities
Oversee all departmental program areas and the memberships area. Identify needs, devise strategies, formulate policies, establish priorities and goals, maintain quality control, determine best practices, direct operations and evaluate outcomes to ensure that programmatic initiatives and objectives are being achieved. Meet frequently with staff to help promote a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement, and to monitor and reinforce that standards are being met.
Advise the Executive Director on matters pertaining to both the Programs section and across the organization; help advance agendas and develop future directions. Anticipate needs, identify trends, address concerns and negotiate outcomes that affect the Programs area relative to customer, legislative, campus, and national issues. Coordinate major special projects and initiatives as necessary.
Supervise the staff comprising the Programs section, and indirectly supervise other full-time and part-time staff within areas of responsibility, by helping to engage, influence, and provide mentorship to ensure accountability and adherence to the highest standards.
Establish and achieve income generation and financial goals for Member & Guest Services and each program area. Manage multiple budgets, including development of budget strategies, allocation of resources, establishment of rates, and prepare for committee and constituent reviews. Assume a leadership role in identifying, prioritizing and implementing capital expenditure projects.
Provide leadership as a senior staff member, working directly with the Executive Director and other staff members to establish strategic goals, analyze data, identify change opportunities, and make decisions. Apprise individuals and groups of pertinent information and be responsive to affiliated needs of staff members and other constituents. Serve as a back-up to other senior staff members as needed.
Externally represent the department at the Executive Director’s request by participating in on and off-campus meetings and maintaining positive public relations. Liaise with other campus entities and departmental stakeholders as needed.
Maintain current knowledge relative to higher education administration, campus recreation, and The University, its environment, purpose and affairs; be prepared to respond to appropriate issues. Utilize strategic planning, conceptualization, critical thinking, leadership, independent judgment, conflict resolution skills, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, initiative, vision, and innovation to ensure quality in all areas of responsibility.
Provide leadership throughout the organization and represent the department at meetings and conferences as required; attend and participate in regular staff meetings, serve on committees and perform other duties as assigned; write proposals, prepare presentations, negotiate agreements and conduct research.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Recreation, Student Personnel Administration, Sports Management or a related field. Ten years full-time work experience in higher education, Student Affairs, collegiate-level recreational sports, or a closely related area. A successful candidate possesses creativity and innovation, strategic and critical thinking skills, vision, empathy, accountability and resilience. Experience with budget administration and risk assessment and management. Experience managing and motivating a full-time staff. Ability to form and maintain collaborative relationships with a diverse population. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
More than 10 years full-time work experience in Higher Education, Student Affairs, collegiate-level recreational sport or a closely related field. Experience running one or more programs on a large, diverse campus. Proven experience with income generation. Progressively responsible experience administering recreational sports Programs. Involvement with NIRSA.
Salary Range
$110,000 + depending on qualifications
Working Conditions
Typical office environment. Exposure to dust, alarms, large crowds, and noise (including construction noises). May work around chemical fumes when gym floors are being refinished. Work under stress, under deadlines, as a team member, independently, with interruptions and with overlapping projects.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
