Physical Requirements The physical requirements of this position include: Occasional lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to 25lbs; occasionally standing or walking with objects 10-25lbs; regularly sitting or standing at a computer workstation for extended periods of time with regular repetitive motions (such as typing); utilizing mouse, keyboard, and phone for portions of the day. Ability to travel to various locations on and off-campus for meetings, projects, incidents, etc.
Shift Primarily days (i.e. Monday – Friday, 8a-5p, 40+ hours per week) Please be aware that as an exempt position, job duties may occasionally require additional time in the evenings, nights, holidays and/or weekends to accomplish work goals in excess of 40hours per week.
Job Summary The University of Kentucky (UK) seeks a Director of Network Engineering to serve as the leader of the Network Engineering team in the Networking and Infrastructure (NI) division within Information Technology Services (ITS). The Director of Network Engineering is responsible for establishing a strategic roadmap for enterprise networking and developing holistic solutions that simplify the deployment and operation of the network, keep up with innovation and continuously support evolving applications, business and end-user requirements. The incumbent will report directly to the ACIO for Networking and Infrastructure and be a member of the NI leadership team. Specific areas of technology responsibility include local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), cloud, security, service strategy, service design, service transition, event management, incident management, problem management, and change management.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
  • Superior knowledge, skills and experience with Cisco routing/switching hardware, software, protocols.
  • Experience with developing complex network solutions for large enterprise networks including local area networking (LAN), wide-area networking (WAN), enterprise Wi-Fi, next-generation firewalls, data center and cloud.
  • Experience with supporting large enterprise networks and managing/supervising network engineers.
  • Thorough understanding of modern service provider data networks and technologies including but not limited to: IPv6, MPLS, OSPF, BGP, EVPN, VXLAN, Segment Routing and CGNAT.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of designing and operating large-scale data networks at the Access, Aggregation, and Core layers. Experience with network protocols and network operating systems, switching and routing, enterprise wireless, load balancers.
  • Hands-on experience with security infrastructure and infrastructure services, including 802.1X, NAC, cryptography, IPSEC, deep-inspection firewalls, intrusion and threat protection platforms, AAA, RADIUS, DNS, NTP, monitoring, and logging.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to perform deep data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, including proven ability to adapt to a dynamic project environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage difficult situations and mission-critical deadlines.
  • Ability to explain complex technology to non-technical individuals.
  • Team player, willing to go the extra mile to make the team succeed.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Preferred Education/Experience
  • Experience in Network Automation best practices (NetDev).
  • Working knowledge of CWDM, DWDM, and optical networking technologies.
  • Cloud experience AWS, Azure, Open Stack, GPC, etc.
  • Continuous integration, test automation and /or Sec Dev Ops on iterative development projects.
  • Working knowledge of VoIP networks.
  • BA in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering preferred
