CU Innovations has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Director of Finance & Administration position.

Directors are responsible for the ongoing leadership and oversight of a department, including the development of strategies and processes which contribute to the University and/or campus mission and accountability for services provided.  Directors are responsible and accountable for the analysis of fiscal and human resources required to achieve department objectives including hiring, compensation, termination, and performance management of subordinate employees.

Job Summary:  The Director of Finance and Administrations’ responsibilities includes the overall financial management and administrative functions of CU Innovations. The DFA works closely with the Executive Director and leadership team in supporting strategic planning and company policies, maintaining an open dialogue with stakeholders, and driving organizational success.  This position is open to a hybrid work format.

Examples of Work Performed:

CU Innovations will expand and grow its business via new  partnerships, strategic collaborations, and joint ventures. This position is responsible for providing financial oversight of CU Innovations as it relates to business/finance, space management, service agreements/grants/contracts, that drive mission aligned value for CU Innovations in either incremental cash flow or return on invested capital.  Create proformas, new company/project fiscal projections, track licensing agreements, comfortable in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment, balancing multiple priorities concurrently, serve as a strong fiscal partner and resource.  More specifically this role is responsible for providing financial oversight, such as budgeting and directing all department funds, gift, and sponsored research funding.  Solid understanding of intellectual property principles, and fiscal transactions, thereof.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee and direct all program fiscal, and administrative activities.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Executive Director and leadership team so that they will have accurate view of the finances
  • Provide financial oversight, controls, procedures and practices for the development, implementation and management of operational budgets, grants & contracts, endowments, and philanthropic gifts consistent with the internal and external compliance and in support of the CU Innovations mission.
  • Interpret financial statements; resolve questions/programs and interpret new policies/procedures; assist with and monitor reconciliation of accounts/statements.
  • Provide high-level insight and execution of University policies and legal guidelines in regard to the approval of expenses, travel reimbursements and other procurement needs as required.
  • Manage the monthly and fiscal year-end close processes, produce monthly budget performance reports, and analyze financial performance to meet the annual and long-term goals of CU Innovations.
  • Advise and inform CU Innovations leadership regarding the present state of CU Innovations funding and provide strategic insight into possible efficiencies and appropriate benchmarks.
  • Communicate and maintain trust relationships with stakeholders, business partners and leadership
  • Delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of staff providing guidance and motivation to drive maximum performance
  • Analyze problematic situations and occurrences and provide solutions to ensure department survival and growth
  • Oversee preparation of budgets and monitors cash flow and expenditures for all department accounts and prepare monthly budget report summaries and share with the Department
  • Provide necessary financial analyses and guidance to leadership on a variety of subject matters
  • Participate in strategic planning in concert with CU Innovations leadership, goals that contribute toward market growth, revenue enhancement, cost containment
  • Facilitate development of a long-range strategic and financial plans for CU Innovations to assure continued financial health for the advancement of the mission
  • Coordinates CU Innovations purchasing activities including delegation of purchasing responsibilities and adherence to purchasing policy.  Works with Procurement Service Center to provide solutions that are cost effective and competitive for all contracts and pricing negotiations.
  • Acts as a resource for the determination and application of the State Fiscal Policies, State and CU rules and procedures, as well as being knowledgeable of State and Federal laws and standards applying to business management (personnel, accounting/audit, etc.)
  • Oversee and/or collaborate with the Office of Regulatory Compliance or cognate unit, related to compliance processes for faculty and staff to ensure requirements are met per university policies and procedures (COI disclosures, PRISM updates, required trainings, etc.).
  • Oversee financial reporting, analysis, forecasting and business planning. Negotiate institutional budgetary support for operational activities, recruitment packages, capital procurement and facility improvement
  • Foster and promote financial growth and health of the Department through the development of new and expanded funding sources and opportunities

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Masters degree in or closely related to Accounting/Finance or CPA
  • 8+ years of significant finance experience
  • Experience in managing a team

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will possess a JD or MBA or master’s degree in a related field, and a minimum of 10 years’ relevant business experience, including demonstrated ability in generating and executing new business ventures, and analyzing and reporting on new business opportunities.
  • Leadership experience in Finance, including developing complex budgeting models, new business models and Profit and Loss pro-forma statements.
  • Experience in commercial/solution sales in the Pharmaceutical / Biotech industry, with significant achievements and relevant network.
  • A successful corporate development and deal-making track record in smaller, entrepreneurial company situations and/or in a large corporate environment, where business skills and knowledge, (including relevant strategic, financial, marketing and operational expertise) have been gained is required.

Supervision Received

  • This position reports to the Executive Director.

Supervision Exercised:

  • This position oversees the Finance Team and some operational staff.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $175,000 to $200,000.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
