Job Summary Dalhousie University’s Office of Advancement is responsible for all fundraising and alumni engagement activities at the institution. A team of over 90 advancement professionals cultivates relationships with alumni and friends of the university and works with donors to help them achieve personal fulfilment through philanthropic investment. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, Institutional Giving the Director, Foundation and Corporate Giving cultivates, solicits, acknowledges and stewards foundation and corporate donors to the University at the major gifts level in collaboration with faculty fundraisers or directly, according to alignment. The role is responsible for the success of the Foundations and Corporations program at the university working closely with their Senior Director and faculty fundraisers across the university to create a program that supports strategic giving by these organizations at Dalhousie.
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintains a deep understanding of University priorities as well as familiarity with Faculty level priorities across the university to better identify and advance opportunities with Foundations & Corporations.
  • Works with the relevant Development Officers and Assistant Deans to develop a comprehensive cultivation strategy for each potential foundation donor.
  • Determines the strategic time to ask for support and works with other Development Officers and Assistant Deans, Deans and/or faculty members to make an approach to a prospective donor, and in some cases, may solicit financial support themselves.
  • Employs relevant databases and research tools to identify foundations and corporations with affiliations or affinity to the University.
  • In conjunction with the Donor Relations Team and the Development Coordinator, Institutional Giving, ensures appropriate stewardship (acknowledgement, naming, and recognition) is done according to established stewardship guidelines.
  • Provides internal and external leadership for Foundation and Corporate fundraising. This includes managing the Development Officer, Foundations and Corporations, and coaching and supporting the wider Development team on strategies for achieving outstanding Foundation and Corporate Giving results through a collaborative team approach.
Note The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree with six years’ progressive experience in fundraising that is inclusive of the cultivation and stewardship of foundation and corporate donors (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Specialized knowledge related to charitable giving by foundations and corporations, together with major gift fundraising and prospect research.
  • Ability to work effectively with foundation and corporation representatives and key decision-makers, as well as senior leaders within the University.
  • Experience in developing and writing both summary and comprehensive funding proposals, including positioning projects, and budgets, to highlight the strongest possible alignment between a project’s social impact and foundation and corporate giving mandates.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities, complex situations and tight deadlines.
