Job Description

This position focuses on the growth of the New Economy Initiative by engaging industry partners and collaborating across the ASU Academic Enterprise, Knowledge Enterprise, and Learning Enterprise.

Under administrative direction, develops, markets, manages and leads the corporate business development function for special initiatives in the Knowledge Enterprise (KE). Establishes relationships and senior-level business networks locally, regionally, and globally for purposes of business development, partnership management, and revenue generation. Advances and implements business development activities, seek sources of funding, expands professional networks, and establishes policies to successfully generate resources for the University.

Salary Range

$88,550 – $126,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Creates new business opportunities through customer relationships, while also providing value to internal and external clients through various agreements.
  • Proactively develops strategies to identify awareness of the ASU initiatives, brand, and assets.
  • Demonstrates expertise in building and maintaining relationships.
  • Develops a strong knowledge base and the internal network of ASU faculty, research community, and expertise so they may be matched with companies aligning interests.
  • Promotes a portfolio of offerings for external clients, which taps into the extended talents across the university, and aligns and matches ASU assets to business needs.
  • Develops long-term sustainable business relationships with corporate entities and internal resources.
  • Develops strategic relationships with internal departments, schools, etc. to help grow ASU Corporate Relations.
  • Utilizes these relationships to develop strategies and service offerings that enable new revenue-generating opportunities for ASU.
  • Manages client engagements, business development, sales, and consulting activities that resource the most innovative university, ASU.
  • Identifies and pursues business relationships with corporate executives that align with ASU goals and objectives.
  • Identifies opportunities for the Learning Enterprise to add value to existing and prospective partners’ workforce development priorities.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategies for new business development throughout the lifecycle.
  • Provides business development consulting services, either directly or through resources, to ASU faculty and staff.
  • Establishes, implements, and evaluates business procedures for corporate engagement.
  • Develops, maintains, and reports on metrics to gauge the business’s social and economic impact to the University and community leaders.
  • Oversees and reports on the financial management of the partnerships and metrics assigned.
  • Champions the use and increased adoption of CRM tools across campus.
  • Travels to corporate sites (domestic and international) to drive collaborative activities.
  • Fosters links between enterprises and scientific or professional partners to improve product development, technology transfer, and commercialization.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a business related discipline or technology-related field AND eight (8) years of related experience specifically in business development, marketing, and program operations, including three (3) years of supervisory/management; OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Masters degree in business, engineering, sciences or related field; PhD in technical field + 4 years of experience.
  • Experience in Sales and/or Business Development in a technical field (4 years)
  • Experience with the negotiation of sales contracts and partnership agreements
  • Experience specifically in business development, marketing, and program operations, cultivating and nurturing relationships with key technical sectors e.g. semiconductor, computer science, biomedical devices, environmental systems, manufacturing etc.  including six or more years of supervisory/management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of corporate relations, business operations and business development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management and financial principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of global business is preferred.
  • Experience in problem solving and decision-making in a complex organization.
  • Experience in planning, analyzing and coordinating activities and establishing priorities.
  • Experience in providing leadership in a start-up environment.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in program development, revenue forecasting, budgeting, administration and business planning.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships in a complex organization including global networking.
  • Experience in negotiating contract terms with clients and communicate with stakeholders
  • Experience in marketing and presenting advanced concepts.
  • Experience in traveling locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Experience in handling confidential information.
  • Experience in establishing and expanding relationships with senior executives.
  • Experience in sales and/or Business Development in a technical field.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
