Director, Marketing

The Stanford University Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation is accepting applications for the position of Director, Marketing. Reporting to the Assistant Athletics Director, Marketing, this position will support all Stanford Athletics marketing efforts to generate revenue, increase attendance and build brand affinity for Stanford Athletics programs. This position will be responsible for the development and implementation of comprehensive marketing plays for Stanford Athletics with a focus on digital marketing, including but not limited to web-based advertising, email marketing and automation, and paid social campaigns, while supporting all other advertising efforts. Successful execution of this role will drive ticket sales and event attendance, advance brand awareness and affinity, increase merchandise sales, generate new leads and amplify the stories of Stanford’s student-athletes and programs, while managing two full-time staff members. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Summary of essential job functions:

  • Create and implement strategic marketing plans for select sports, working closely with the ticket sales and fan experience teams and with support from the marketing team; support development of marketing plans for other sports and initiatives.
  • Manage, build and track marketing automation email campaigns, including nurturing campaigns and other trigger-based emails.
  • Lead in the creation, optimization and tracking of digital advertising campaigns across channels including search, display, social, OTT, and audio streaming.
  • Oversee, create and track lead generation campaigns in pursuit of finding and nurturing new fans.
  • Spearhead market research to support strategic marketing decisions, as well as pre- and postseason planning and analysis.
  • Write, edit, and support copy and design of various marketing campaigns including email marketing, digital ads, postcards, and other marketing collateral, which adhere to communications and brand strategy standards.
  • Collaborate with communications and digital teams in amplifying digital content to build fandom and leverage social platforms as a marketing tool to help sell tickets, generate leads and support other revenue-generating initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external vendors and partners (e.g., Buck/Cardinal Club, Paciolan).
  • Work cross-functionally on select projects (e.g. Cardinal Kids Club, CardinalW efforts) to support brand affinity and revenue goals.
  • Be a positive steward and ambassador of the Stanford Athletics brand.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated passion for college athletics and an understanding of the evolving college sports landscape.
  • Experience in integrated marketing strategy and execution across channels including digital and print, and understands how to implement effective campaigns across multiple channels.
  • Knowledge of strategic analysis, customer segmentation strategies and marketing planning.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to lead teams, drive cross-functional groups towards a common goal, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Supervisory/management experience including the ability to foster leadership and teamwork amongst others, is preferred.
  • Self-motivated attitude with the ability to work independently, embrace change and welcome fresh perspectives.
  • Ability to learn from past mistakes and adjust accordingly.
  • Team player who is willing to “get hands dirty” and help out where needed.
  • Creative problem solver with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Suite.
  • Familiarity with marketing automation, Photoshop, Google Adwords, Adroll and Facebook advertising preferred.
