Job Title:
Director, IT Portfolio Management

Department:
ODEE Marketing and Communications

The Office of Technology and Digital Innovation has a diverse portfolio of tools and services to support teaching, learning, and work at The Ohio State University. The IT Portfolio Management Director serves as the senior coordination hub of all work within the OTDI portfolio. The core goals of this role are to:

  • Develop processes that support coordination of work across the IT Strategic Roadmap.

  • Increase transparency of activities for OTDI leadership, our team members, business

    partners, and the university community.

  • Identify and facilitate activities to resolve cross-team impacts, potential roadblocks, and

    efficiency opportunities.

To achieve these goals, the Portfolio Management Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Portfolio Stewardship: Unlike project managers who focus on the success of an individual project, the Portfolio Management Director is responsible for ensuring the portfolio’s  success and making recommendations as to what is in the best interests of the portfolio rather than any individual project within, requiring objectivity and critical thinking.

  • Process Design: Implementation and continuous improvement of OTDI-wide processes that will help the organization and its business partners realize opportunities and efficiencies. This includes, and is not limited to, coordinated strategies for prioritization, request intake, project tracking, roadmap insight, investment planning, and strategic alignment.

  • Matrixed Leadership: The IT Portfolio Management Director will coordinate a matrixed group of project managers from across the organization to identify opportunities and present options to the OTDI senior leadership team to realize opportunities through portfolio management improvements. In addition to working within OTDI, the IT Portfolio Management Director will partner with departments and units across the campus and medical center to further identify opportunities for portfolio management processes to improve how we partner with them.

  • Reporting and Analytics: Develop and implement a recurring cadence of standard reporting and standardize project data across OTDI to derive data-driven insights around resource capacity, sequencing, and dependencies.

  • Coach and Educator: A vital component of this role is to raise the overall proficiency of OTDI leaders, managers, and service owners in project and portfolio management. With hundreds of concurrent activities, not all projects can have dedicated project management support. Therefore, the PMD will develop and conduct a recurring Project Management Fundamentals course in collaboration with our training team and the matrixed project management network. Additionally, this individual will be available for coaching/consultation

services to ensure that standards and best practices are integrated into work across OTDI.

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 10+ years IT portfolio, program and/or project management experience in large, complex organization.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Higher education employment.

  • Related professional certifications.

  • Ability to find commonalities and work in an environment where the diversity of work

requires the concurrent use of multiple project management philosophies.

  • Comfort interacting with high-level university leadership, providing honest feedback which

may run contrary to the desired answers.

  • Ability to hold people and projects accountable through providing positive coaching

    respectful reinforcement.

  • There is both an art and a science to portfolio management. Understanding organizational culture/values and how to apply organizational change management principles to help adoption of the portfolio management processes.
