Job Description

The Office of Applied Innovation seeks a Director of Economic Mobility to lead our efforts to expand access to economic opportunity in Arizona. A critical member of a dedicated team, the Director of Economic Mobility will design and lead initiatives and projects based on insights gleaned from data, relationships with university and community stakeholders, and knowledge of local and national trends. This role will advocate for changes that enhance and improve children’s access to economic opportunity. This position will work closely with our Director of Data Science – Economic Mobility to guide the development of an opportunity map to visualize the impact of potential actions that policymakers, investors, and civic leaders can take to address and improve the underlying social conditions that influence childhood economic mobility.

The Office of Applied Innovation team uses clear data visualizations and relationship-building to present information to practitioners, community members and policy makers to help guide their decision-making. This role will be essential in the design, development, and rollout of the opportunity map and communicating the Office’s mission to leverage emerging scientific, technological, design, and policy innovations to improve economic mobility in Arizona and the United States. Successful applicants will bring knowledge of local, regional, and national trends in economic mobility, policy expertise, and project management to maximize communities’ potential so that residents experience an excellent quality of life and contribute to a healthy and vibrant economy.

Essential Duties

  • Manage the design and rollout of an Arizona-focused opportunity map; 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside groups interested in economic mobility in Arizona (Schools, city/county/state government officials, foundations, Departments of Economic Development, Non-Profits, etc.);
  • Travel to sites around Arizona to meet, connect with, and present opportunity map and related insights to current and prospective partners;
  • Identify opportunities for partnership and collaboration between ASU and city governments, CBOs, nonprofits, and others;
  • Take on individual project responsibilities (from design through execution), while guiding and collaborating with other team members’ work and ensuring high-quality, timely outcomes;
  • Identify and elevate promising university and community initiatives that make use of emerging scientific, technologic, design, and policy innovations to improve access to economic opportunity;
  • Connect external groups with relevant ASU resources (people, time, experience, tools, etc.);
  • Keep stakeholders informed of projects and accomplishments through a variety of mechanisms (social media, newsletters, presentations, etc.);
  • Make connections within the University between internal teams with complementary ideas/programs;
  • Maintain an inventory of philanthropic and governmental funding opportunities and assist partners in identifying relevant opportunities to cover costs associated with programmatic interventions;
  • Prepare reports and presentations that clearly articulate opportunity map findings to diverse audiences;
  • Work closely with stakeholders and partners across the University and the region to translate shared goals and vision into a clear strategy to improve childhood economic mobility;
  • Actively participate with and lead collaboration among internal team members and University and community partners to deliver timely, effective and efficient insights;
  • Represent the Office of Applied Innovation and the ASU at events, meetings, and working groups related to economic mobility and opportunity;
  • Identify and stay abreast of current and emerging local and national economic trends and their implications for ASU and Arizona;
  • Perform other projects or duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree or equivalent experience in education, economics, public policy, public administration, social science or a related field, preferred 
  • 10 years of related experience, preferred
  • Knowledge of local, regional, and national contextual factors that influence economic mobility;
  • Experience designing and launching projects at scale;
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively to a wide variety of stakeholders in policymaking, philanthropy, and community development, both in writing and verbally;
  • Comfort interpreting and communicating data and trends;
  • Ability to learn new data science techniques and skills to meet organizational needs;
  • Experience using data analytics to simulate actions and policies, including at the city, state, and national levels;
  • Experience managing others in a supervisory and/or project coordination capacity.

Working Environment

The Office of Applied Innovation is located in the Fulton Center on Arizona State University’s campus in Tempe, Arizona. This is a hybrid role (a combination of in-person and remote work) with occasional travel to sites around Arizona. 

  • This role is performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. 
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • May be required to perform tasks at partner offices, in the field within and/or across University campuses.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
