Position Summary:
Responsible for the coordination, implementation and evaluation of all activities for providing Level I trauma care per UNMH/HSC mission and operational goals. Ensures the delivery of optimal and safe patient care, which includes fiscal management, strategic planning, standards compliance, clinical practice and staff development, oversight, trauma continuing education and performance improvement activities that evaluate program effectiveness. Guidelines include all departmental personnel and hospital policies and procedures, standards per Level I Trauma Center regulations per the American College of Surgeons & State EMS trauma center regulations. Ensures adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures. Patient care may include; Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* MANAGEMENT – Responsible for organizing and directing clinical practice in collaboration with the program medical director through development, and implementation maintenance of practice guidelines per recognized standards
* QUALITY – Develop, implement, and maintain a Performance Improvement Program per established hospital standards and recognized state and national standards for trauma services; provides on-going revisions as necessary
* PATIENT CARE – Oversee patient care for evaluation of program services, evaluate patient outcomes, adjust patient care processes as necessary to ensure optimal care, consult with other health care providers
* SUPERVISION – Responsible for assurance of staff orientation, credentialing, competency completion and continuing education
* BENCHMARKS – Coordinate benchmarking activities as related to trauma operations
* COORDINATION – Perform functions related to serving as an ambassador representing UNMH/HSC in a professional and positive manner for promoting UH and Trauma services
* MARKETING – Maintain an on-going and effective outreach and marketing program consistent with UNMH/HSC mission
* PATIENT CARE – Assist patients, staff, families, and other related health care providers in times of stress or crisis
* RESOURCES – Seek resources for defusing and debriefing activities
* ACCREDITATION – Responsible for achieving and maintaining Level I trauma center accreditation in collaboration with the medical director, for both American College of Surgeons verification and State EMS trauma designation
* PURCHASING – Coordinate all activities for request for proposal, on-site survey process and follow-up assessment and compliance reports
* EDUCATION – Responsible for ensuring availability of trauma education activities for standards compliance and ongoing continuing education; participates in activities as coordinator, faculty as needed
* PATIENT CARE – Facilitate injury prevention activities in collaboration with multidisciplinary resources for presentation of formal and ongoing activities
* PATIENT CARE – Oversee trauma case management activities for optimal care, reducing morbidity and mortality, reducing length of stay
* PLANNING – Develop and implement discharge and referral plans with referral facilities
* AGREEMENTS – Facilitate completion of current inter-hospital transfer agreements
* DOCUMENTATION – Responsible for assurance of accurate documentation of information related to the Trauma Registry patient care activities, regulatory requirements, data collection, and statistical reporting
* REPORTS – Prepare reports, proposals, and related document for organizational needs
* SUPERVISION – Develop efficient organizational structure, supervise employees – select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
* BUDGET – Develop and administer the division’s annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 – Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 – Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 – Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 – Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 – Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don’t understand or may “not seem right”

Experience:
Essential:
2 years directly related experience

Nonessential:
Bilingual English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo
Teaching and public speaking experience
5 years directly related experience
Trauma registry; injury scoring; injury prevention

Credentials:
Essential:
* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
* RN in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM

Physical Conditions:
Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
