Position Focus:

Yale Public Safety seeks an accomplished and effective communications leader to develop and execute the communications strategy of the institutions’ Office of Public Safety and Community Engagement. The Strategic Communications Director, Public Safety reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Community Engagement. This position is a member of the Public Safety leadership team and works closely with communications professionals across Yale University. Work is in partnership with Yale Office of Public Affairs & Communications (OPAC) and other key university stakeholders.

The ideal candidate in this role will be able to operate on both strategic and tactical levels to promote the work and reputation of the Office of Public Safety and Community Engagement; communicate vital information to our community and neighbors; and lead the office’s engagement with traditional and social media. This role will have direct and intentional collaboration with members of the institution’s communications offices to ensure widespread, consistent, and effective internal and external communication efforts. This position requires strong and demonstrated written and conversational communication skills and the ability to influence outcomes. The incumbent will be highly effective at building credibility and relationships at all levels of the institution and externally.  Position will lead the development of and executes public relations strategy, output, and performance for the department with the goal of increasing media impressions in local, national, industry-specific and alumni media. Creates communications strategy to enhance transparency and build community partnership and trust. Ensures consistent look and tone for all department communications, including written content, website and social media.

Essential Duties

1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures. 2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University. 3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University. 5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. 6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures. 7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature. 8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives. 9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems. 10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area. 11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies. 13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees. 14. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field. Five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated excellence in writing or content generation for diverse audiences, using varied formats that include, but are not limited to, web, print, news media, and social media outlets; skills or willingness to learn mass communications tools, video, blogging, and other new media.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to work with web content management systems, complex web systems such as news media databases or digital asset management systems. Ability to analyze information and evaluate results in order to choose the best solutions and solve problems

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of people in a variety of organizational situations. Readiness to help define communication priorities in consultation with others; demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to incorporate timely feedback and use editorial judgment with strong attention to detail; ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and balance priorities Must be able to work effectively and independently in an environment with multiple priorities. Expert news judgment, writing and editing skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to regularly work evenings, early mornings, and weekends and be available to address emergency situations on a 24/7 basis as needed. Knowledge of information dissemination techniques, including alternative ways to inform via written, verbal, and visual media.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Master’s degree in relevant discipline. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in public safety communications or a related field. Demonstrated experience in developing communications for a range of media and working with creative professionals in design, photography or video.
