At BSS we provide an opportunity for our students to explore, design and build within our learning spaces. The Design Technology Technician is responsible for integrating design technology tools (coding, 3D printing and a variety of maker materials) that align with our Signature of a BSS Girl attributes and our Culture of Powerful Learning best teaching practices, within our Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4 Math and Science curriculum. Our Junior School is a place to explore, grow, discover, collaborate, create and have lots of fun. It is the first step in the lifetime adventure of learning.
Summary of Position
This position supports and builds capacity in partnership with the teacher, in the use of design technology to further develop Math and Science learning outcomes. This position builds core design technology skills using a design framework and process with both faculty and students. This includes providing teacher support, integration within classrooms and lab, skills development, appropriate and safe use of tools and the development of new techniques and learning opportunities, specifically within STEM. This position will participate as a team member to continue to move the school forward at the leading edge of technology based education.
Specific Accountabilities
– Supports the junior school in their effort to continue developing a fully envisioned STEM/STEAM program
– Collaborates and consults with teachers in use and integration of Design Technology (DT) tools ie. coding, 3D printing as well maker materials tools that can be done in class or in the DT lab and which are developmentally appropriate
– Able to apply design thinking into projects and learning
– Deepens teacher understanding and use of DT for learning by delivering planned or just-in-time skills development.
– Reviews, updates and establishes new safety procedures that provides faculty and students on important health and safety practices as they use the tools and the spaces
– Maintains and services equipment, including but not limited to software and hardware servicing and updates
– Manages and monitors equipment and materials inventory. Proactively places orders, receives and restocks as necessary and provides required paperwork to Accounts Payable Administrator
– As part of a team, participates in testing and pilots on current and/or emergent tools as well as best use practices relevant to the BSS learning environment and strategic directions.
– Embeds diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into all processes and external communications.
Skills, Experience and Attributes
– Ability to incorporate design technology that helps achieve Junior Math and Science curricular outcomes
– Experience in designing and integrating technology that meaningfully align with JK – Grade 4 curricular outcomes, specifically math and science
– Experience with Design Technology tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting, routing tools, robotics, coding (e.g. Scratch), makerspace tools.
– Understanding of the SAMR (substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition) model
– Strong working knowledge and experience with the Apple platform including software and hardware
– Currency with respect to emergent Design Technology tools
– A growth mindset of continuous improvement and learning
– Culturally competent with a positive attitude toward cultural uniqueness and a readiness to accept and respect others
– Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
