Work group:

IEK-11 – Helmholtz-Institut Erlangen-Nürnberg für Erneuerbare Energien

Area of research:

Technik

Job description:

Your Job:

The department “Material Hydrogen Storage” in which you are assigned at HI ERN is headed by Prof. Dr. Peter Wasserscheid and focuses on the further development of a process for the storage and release of hydrogen using chemical hydrogen carriers (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier – LOHC for short) towards a sustainable energy economy. As a LOHC system, the focus is particularly on perhydro-benzyltoluene/benzyltoluene. HI ERN is a world leader in the field of chemical hydrogen storage using the LOHC system mentioned above and is doing outstanding research work. The project we will work on together, “Emission-free and highly emission-reduced rail transport on non-electrified lines” is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and aims to demonstrate LOHC technology as a locomotive energy supply unit. Concepts for the scaling of laboratory-scale test units are being developed and test stands for the experimental testing of these are being set up. Aspects such as power density, heat integration and operating safety are to be evaluated and further developed. Your Tasks:

  • Development of the 3D topology of chemical process plants for the release of hydrogen from LOHCs.
  • Design of pressure vessels as chemical reactors, heat exchangers or tanks
  • Preparation of documents for external manufacturing and coordination of orders
  • Accompanying the preparation of safety concepts in accordance with the applicable technical regulations (e.g.: DGRL, ArbSchG, BetrSichV, ATEX)
  • Construction, maintenance and operation of test facilities in the laboratory and on mobile platforms

Your Profile:

  • Very well completed scientific or technical university studies in the fields of mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy technology, chemical engineering or a comparable discipline
  • Experience in process plant and pressure vessel design (EN 13445)
  • Understanding of P&I flow diagrams and process engineering fundamentals
  • Software skills required: Autodesk Inventor or other 3D CAD programs
  • Desirable software knowledge: Microsoft Visio (P&ID flow diagram), COMSOL (strength calculations)
  • Very good knowledge of German and good knowledge of English, both written and spoken

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

  • Comprehensive training courses and individual opportunities for personal and professional further development
  • Extensive company health management
  • Ideal conditions for balancing work and private life, as well as a family-friendly corporate policy
  • Flexible working hours in a full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
  • Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. remote work
  • 30 days of annual leave and provision for days off between public holidays and weekends (e.g. between Christmas and New Year)
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service

Place of employement: Erlangen, Nürnberg or Fürth

We offer you an exciting and varied role in an international and interdisciplinary working environment. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years. Salary and social benefits will conform to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them.
