As a member of the Senior Executive Group of the University, the Deputy Provost works in partnership with other members of the team to actively contribute to La Trobe’s mission and to achieve its strategic goals. The Deputy Provost is accountable for the culture and performance of the academic workforce and, in particular, for ensuring that the University’s academic culture aligns with the University’s Cultural Qualities, is committed to excellence and continuous improvement, draws on the intrinsic motivation of the members of a committed academic community, and is highly collaborative.
The Deputy Provost also provides high-level leadership for the academic functions within the Office of the Provost, in particular for outreach and the work-integrated-learning academic team, and provides overall strategic and operational support for the Provost.
Skills and Experience
To be considered for this position, you will have:
- An international reputation for scholarship and research of a kind that is appropriate for a leader within a research and teaching university.
- Demonstrated ability to develop forward-looking vision and strategy for the academic workforce and staffing of the University with creativity and resolve.
- Demonstrated experience in leading an academic unit of significant size and complexity, and in the management of academic staff, to achieve excellence in teaching, research and reputation and to promote academic culture, engagement and leadership.
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary practice and trends in all facets of academic work, workforce, leadership, culture and performance, nationally and internationally.
- Evidence of the professional and personal maturity, political acumen, tenacity and resilience needed to lead sustained change in a university environment, working through influence as well as authority.
- Significant experience in introducing and leading change in a dynamic higher education sector.
- A commitment to advocacy of the University’s vision and objectives in the academic community and ability to build wider commitment to them.
- A high level of business and political acumen and understanding of University finances, policies and regulatory obligations, in particular human resources policies and obligations.
