Departmental Lecturer in Islamic Art and Architecture

The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies aims to appoint a Departmental Lecturer (DL) in Islamic Art and Architecture, for twelve months to cover the teaching and certain other duties of a permanent post-holder during a period of research leave. (You must be able to start by 1st January 2025)

This position is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified scholar to develop their career through research, teaching and collaborative work in Islamic Art and Architecture at Oxford. The successful candidate will play an active and valued role in teaching the Faculty’s undergraduate and graduate courses in the area, particularly in the field of late medieval and early modern Islamic material culture.

You will have completed, or be very close to completing a doctorate in a subject relating to Islamic Art and Architecture, with a specialisation in late medieval and early modern Islamic material culture. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to teach using Ottoman Turkish and/or Persian primary sources, and be able to lecture, give tutorials and supervise Master’s students on various aspects of Islamic Art and Architecture. You must have the ability and willingness to undertake administrative tasks and provide pastoral support for students, and a commitment to communicating and publishing research in your field of study. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential.

This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for twelve months.
