About the Role 

This is a unique professorial opportunity for an individual across all forms of creative screen and sound production. The Department Chair, Department of Film, Games and Animation will be a team orientated individual with strong leadership capabilities and track record.  The incumbent will have an established research and teaching profile as well as a demonstrated ability to initiate and manage internal and external relationship, including with industry and government entities.  

The Department Chair is responsible for the academic leadership and operational management of the Department and is a member of the School Executive. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education, they will work collaboratively with other Deans, Associate Deans, Research Centre Directors, Department Chairs and other teams within the University to develop and implement strategies aligned with the University’s strategic direction to maintain and further contemporise one of Australia’s leading tertiary screen production education and research entities.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will have experience in the below key areas:

  • A national or international reputation as an academic leader in a relevant field and a demonstrated ability to lead across the broader discipline area.
  • Demonstrated ability to both lead and be an effective team contributor for the development of new courses in relevant disciplines and inspire staff to deliver innovative course design in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Effective strategic, analytical and conceptual skills, together with the ability to contribute to devising and implementing strategic plans in a complex organisational environment.
  • Ability to lead and contribute to collaborative cross- disciplinary and cross-sectoral teams and to provide learning and teaching leadership and expertise that contributes to improved student outcomes.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide variety of academics, work within a consultative, team environment in multi-disciplinary contexts, including an ability to work effectively with senior external members of the Faculty, University and relevant professions in industry and government.
  • Ability to lead implementation of a research strategy within the Department that delivers performance outcomes recognised at national and international levels, including promoting engagement of academic staff with research centres and through collaborations and joint research involving other universities, industry, the professions and government.

Qualifications

A PhD qualification or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the Department.

We teach industry-oriented courses in film and television, traditional and digital animation, games production and digital media. Our courses combine strong theoretical foundations with a hands-on focus – meaning our students not only gain experience with industry-standard hardware and software, but also a comprehensive understanding of concepts that will underpin their careers across the creative industries.
