The Dental Hygienist for Penn Dental Medicine’s (PDM) team at Public Health Management Corporation’s (PHMC) Cedar campus will provide direct patient care and clinical, as well as student and resident support.

Our ideal candidate will partner and collaborate with a team of talented, engaged dental assistants and dentists in providing exceptional patient experiences. Additionally, individuals selected for this role will have experience and champion their position as a leader of the clinical practice – serving as an educator and role model to dental assistants as well as partner and bridge for dentists and patient care.
- Prepares patient for dental hygiene treatment by setting up and breaking down operatory
- Escort patients to and from operatories.
- Review medical and dental history, current medications and determine adaptations and modifications to care based on patients’ current health status
- Acquaints patients with preventive care-oriented practice philosophy.
- Perform thorough oral prophylaxis (debridement) on scheduled patients which include proper use of ultrasonic cleaning devices, scaling instruments, polishing and flossing as needed.
- Completes periodontal scaling and root planning and periodontal maintenance on selected patients as needed.
- Conduct and document dental and periodontal assessments, risk assessments, including oral cancer screening, charting conditions of decay and oral disease (via axiUm), exposing and capturing digital images (via MiPacs) and documenting interventions performed electronically by recording vital signs, clinical notes and procedures.
- Arrests dental decay by applying topical fluorides, SDF, and occlusal sealants on indicated patients, recommending decay-preventing agents as needed.
- Educate and motivate patients by providing individualized oral hygiene and preventive care instructions designed to prevent and control dental decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease, presents and explains treatment plans to patients, demonstrates effective communication to bridge the gap between a pending treatment plan and a completed treatment plan, provides postoperative instructions and schedules subsequent visits.
- Determines appropriate recall interval for patients for continuing care and communicates this information for scheduling.
- Additional duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- An Associate’s Degree or two-year college equivalent and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- PA dental hygiene license is required; PA permit in administration of local anesthesia and/or PA licensure as a public health dental hygiene practitioner is preferred
- CPR certification required.
- Employment clearance through the State of PA to work on/with children: as determined through Pennsylvania Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting Database is required.
- Experience with AxiUm preferred, experience with other dental electronic health records is required
- Ability to accommodate different scheduling requirements based on the operational needs of the Cedar Campus.
