About the Role
We seek an exceptional candidate for the role Dean of Dentistry and Institute Director, a pivotal senior leadership position within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London. Reporting to the Vice-Principal (Health), Professor Sir Mark Caulfield, you will help us to realise our ambition of being top in dentistry worldwide. You will build on our local and global impact by developing and delivering an ambitious strategy for a world-leading dental school, delivering a step change in research, high impact publications, and enhanced academic and employer reputation. Based within a state-of-the-art Dental Hospital you will oversee new course development and implementation of innovative approaches to learning that enriches the student experience, enhances outcomes and produces the highest calibre dentists and allied health professionals.
About You
You will be an inspirational leader with significant experience of management and leading change in a complex clinical academic environment. You will have an internationally renowned academic reputation with an outstanding global research and/or education profile in a field relevant to the Institute’s portfolio as well as proven ability to successfully engage and bring together staff around a compelling vision for the future of dentistry, the faculty and university. Key to your success will be your ability to work collaboratively and in close partnership with clinical academics, allied health professionals and other key NHS partners and our wider community. You will have a commitment to the University’s values and will be able to evidence leadership in embedding the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion.
About the Faculty
In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) 92% of Queen Mary’s research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent and we were 7th for Research Power. The Institute of Dentistry is one of six in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry offering international excellence in cardiovascular, inflammation, cancer, genomics and population health research and teachng. In the QS rankings Dentistry is 14th in the workd but we aspire to be the top dental school. The Institute has a long and proud history of providing internationally renowned taught programmes and currently offers 2 undergraduate programmes and 14 Post graduate taught programmes, with a combined cohort of circa 500 students. It also supports clinical service for a population of 2.5 million with unrivalled ethnic diversity in East London and the wider Thames Gateway.

The Institute of Dentistry at QM is embedded within the state of the art Barts and The London Dental Hospital in Whitechapel. The professorial appointment is made on a full time, indefinite basis: the Dean of Dentistry and Institute Director role is for five years in the first instance with the opportunity for renewal for at least a further 5 years. You will also hold a Professorial Chair in a relevant institute within the Faculty.
