Database Engineer
- Full time Fixed Term until June 2024
- Based in Hobart
- Provide expert database services to the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) team
The Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) is a function of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and has developed a single integrated framework for marine data management, discovery and access, supporting both IMOS and the broader Australian marine community.
The Opportunity
This position will assist in ongoing technology transformations and optimisations as well as supporting the existing information infrastructure underpinning the AODN. They will provide expert database advice and assistance to our data services team to optimise data pipelines as well as support to our software developers building and maintaining our data-driven cloud-based applications.
Key Accountabilities:
- Work with the Information Infrastructure team to support all aspects of our data infrastructure.
- Manage and implement data infrastructure changes, optimisations and upgrades.
- Provide expertise in data structures, optimising database performance and SQL statements to maintain database performance and reliability.
- Apply best practices for Postgres databases and Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) design, ensuring quality and consistency across all development, testing and production environments.
- Work with other members of the AODN team on database design, delivery and maintenance.
- Maintain documentation of processes, systems and applications
Your Application
To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;
- Tertiary qualification in Information Technology related field and experience in database administration (in lieu of formal qualifications, consideration will be given to candidates with relevant experience).
- Significant experience in relational database management including database design, administration, troubleshooting technical issues and performance tuning, preferably using PostgreSQL and PostGIS
- Strong understanding and knowledge of AWS database offerings with hands-on experience deploying and maintaining database infrastructure in AWS, in particular Amazon Relational Data Service (RDS)
- Experience designing and executing data migrations and a solid foundation in cloud security concept and practices.
- A methodical approach to development and documentation of software and systems with excellent written and verbal communication skills that enable complex concepts to be communicate clearly and concisely

- Scripting languages such as python or equivalents
Remuneration
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 7 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $119,949 comprising base salary within the range of $93,273 to $102,521 plus 17% superannuation.
