The Center for Immunology of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines (IIV) at RIVM. This Center is the knowledge center of the government in the field of immunology of infectious diseases and vaccines. The core mission of this center is to provide information and advice about effectiveness of vaccines, vaccination strategies and immune responses against infectious diseases to parties within the government and to the general public. In support of this task, research performed at IIV is focused on optimization of the effectiveness of current and future vaccination programs, immunosurveillance, age-related efficacy of the immune responses and correlates of protection. In this work the center collaborates intensively with other RIVM knowledge centers and national and international collaborators specialized in immunology, microbiology, epidemiology and outbreak control of infectious diseases. Within the center IIV, the department Immune Mechanisms – Correlate of Protection (IMC) investigates the immune mechanisms that protect us against disease caused by human pathogens. The research is focused on characterizing cellular immune responses in detail, both the innate arm, as well as the adaptive arm. In various research projects we aim to obtain biomarkers or immune profiles that correlate to protection against disease.

Main responsibilities

• Analyze data from clinical (vaccination) studies on topics as duration of immunity, age-specific vaccine responses, effects of booster-vaccination, reinfection.
• Clean database and check for inconsistencies together with data managers
• Explore datasets, design data analysis plan and advise on next steps in laboratory analysis to fill data gaps and address scientific objectives
• Supporting data analysis for different projects within the Center
• Write scientific papers on the findings
• Present results in meetings

Requirements

We are looking for:

• You have a PhD degree in a (bio)technical, or medical topic, preferably within an immunological focus.
• You have extensive experience with analysis in R of large longitudinal datasets.
• You are well organized and because you have affinity with laboratory analysis, you can prioritize and advise on next steps.
• You are result oriented, highly motivated, with a desire to learn and tackle new challenges and can work effectively both alone and in a team.
• You can bridge different disciplines and know how to translate the results to address public health problems.
• You contribute to an open, stimulating and pleasant working environment and actively participate in scientific discussions.
• You have excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in this collaborative and multi-disciplinary team environment.

Fixed-term contract: Arbeidsovereenkomst voor een bepaalde tijd van 12 maanden.

Naast het salaris ontvang je een Individueel Keuzebudget (IKB). Het IKB bestaat uit geld (16,37% van je bruto jaarsalaris) en tijd. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment has been promoting public health and safeguarding a healthy environment for more than 100 years. RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment has a central role in infectious disease control and national prevention and population screening programmes. We conduct independent (scientific) research in the field of Public Health, Health Services, Environmental Safety and Security. In our role as trusted advisor, we support citizens, professionals and governments in the challenge of keeping the environment and ourselves healthy.
RIVM coordinates the Dutch Population Screening programmes such as newborn screening, fights infectious diseases and plays a central role in population surveys. We also investigate what needs to be done to ensure high-quality health services, safe consumer products and a healthy living environment. In our role as a trusted advisor, we conduct independent (scientific) research in the field of Public Health and Health Services and a safe environment.
To maintain a clean, healthy and safe environment, we monitor the quality of air, water and soil and assess the risks to health and the environment. We do this on behalf of the Dutch government and often in collaboration with other research and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally. We also have a Strategic Programme (SPR) in which we conduct research that has not been commissioned. This programme is used, to innovate and develop knowledge in order to be prepared to respond to future issues in health and sustainability.

 

Department
Within our Centre for Immunology of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines

Within our Centre for Immunology of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines we perform research on how vaccinations or infections protect against viruses and bacteria. We investigate the immunity gained after vaccination and/or infection with a special focus on the vulnerable groups in our society such as children and elderly. To this end we collect human samples in clinical studies, which are analyzed in the laboratory. We investigate the development, the quality and the duration of the immune response against amongst others the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cause of COVID-19. To investigate the quantity and quality of the immune response in the Dutch population, the laboratory results on cellular immune response (both innate and adaptive) and antibody levels will be linked to the available data on type of vaccination, age, sex, and time since vaccination. By repeated sampling we can monitor the kinetics of immunity over time.
