Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin Biotechnology Center (UWBC) and the Center for Genomic Science Innovation (CGSI) are committed to maximizing the benefits of biotechnology research within the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin System, State of Wisconsin, and the nation. The Centers facilitate high quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary research and supports, coordinates, disseminates, and advances biotechnology.
The UWBC is a large and complex organization containing 13 sub-units and the CGSI, and administers the Computation and Informatics in Biology and Medicine (CIBM) graduate training program and the Genomic Sciences Training Program (GSTP). The Center has a variety of funding sources; federal and non-federal grants and awards, and seven fee-for-service revenue generated 136 accounts.
UWBC is a synergistic blend of core service facilities, research, and outreach activities. The Bioinformatics Resource Center (BRC), one of UWBC core facilities, is seeking to add a highly self-motivated individual to our team. This individual will be responsible for working with research personnel to implement bioinformatics and statistical methods for a myriad of project types. This will involve scripting, exploration of parameter selections, summarizing large data in tabular and graphical formats, and providing detailed documentation of all methods used. This individual will work closely with a collaborative group to develop robust workflows that can be efficiently applied to similar projects. Many aspects of these analyses are computationally intensive requiring high-throughout infrastructure available at the BRC.

Education:

Required
Master’s Degree
Bioinformatics, Statistics, Biological Sciences or a related field preferred.

Qualifications:

Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred experience:
-Two years of statistics or bioinformatics experience in a professional and/or student staff setting
-Proficiency with Linux and a programming or statistical language such as R
-Practical experience in one or more of the following areas: differential expression of RNAseq data for multifactor experiments, analysis of single-cell data, or experience working with long-read data from ONT or PacBio systems
-Ability to stay current on new biological and bioinformatics methodologies
-Effective and flexible communication skills
-Ability to work effectively in socially and academically diverse settings
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively on team-based projects

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $50,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The minimum salary for a Data Scientist I position is $50,000 annually. The minimum salary for a Data Scientist II position is $63,800 anually. Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
