The Data Scientist will report to the Data Science Team Lead under the overall direction of the Lead for the Centre for Humanitarian Data. The incumbent will be expected to work closely with the rest of the Centre team.
The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
- Researching partner models to understand their design and potential application in humanitarian operations.
- Designing new tools and analyses to be used for humanitarian action.
- Supporting the UN Central Emergency Response Fund in the development of anticipatory action frameworks.
- Providing technical support to OCHA Country Offices for risk analysis and other technical tasks in support of the humanitarian response plans.
- Contributing to development of the Centre’s work aimed at ensuring data analytics are used responsibly in the sector.

a. Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics, economics or in a field related to the post description with five (5) years of relevant experience is required; OR
- A first level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) preferably in mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics, economics or in a field related to the post description with seven (7) years of relevant experience is desirable;
b. Work Experience
Required
Relevant experience is defined as programming experience in Python and/or R and their relevant libraries (e.g. Pandas, dplyr).
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in statistical modelling, data analytics, data cleaning and/or processing is required.
- Experience in developing tools such as GitHbu, Jupiter Notebook, PostGreSQL, Docker or JIRA is required.
Desirable: (The following experience is optional. Candidates who do not have it are welcome to apply)
Experience in understanding partner needs and requirements is desirable.
- Experience in data visualization and Geographic Information System GIS are desirable.
- Experience working in the humanitarian or development sectors is desirable.
- Experience with climate data and climate modelling is desirable.
c. Language
Fuency in English (read, write, speak) is required.
- Knowledge of any of the other UN official languages will be considered as an advantage
