Position Description

The Data Coordinator for the UDN Coordinating Center (UDN CC) at the Harvard Medical School (HMS) Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) will play a key role as part of a cohesive and interdisciplinary group of research clinicians, bioinformaticians, scientists, and developers collaborating to oversee the construction and operation of the UDN.

The UDN consists of the UDN CC at HMS, twelve clinical sites, a sequencing core, two model organisms screening centers, a metabolomics core, and a biorepository. Together these sites aim to: (1) provide answers for patients with undiagnosed diseases from around the world; (2) generate new knowledge about disease mechanisms; (3) assess the application of new approaches to phenotyping and the use of genomic technologies; and (4) identify potential therapeutic targets, if possible.

The Data Coordinator will be directly involved in the implementation and coordination of day-to-day clinical research operations and future activities of the UDN CC.

Primary Function and Duties:

Data Review and Sharing

  • Review clinical and research data as it is entered into the UDN central database and collaborate with network sites to ensure data are accurate and complete
  • Prepare and submit phenotypic and genomic data to relevant databases on an ongoing basis (examples: PhenomeCentral, ClinVar, database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP), Analysis Visualization and Informatics Lab-space (AnVIL))
  • Coordinate data sharing collaborations with external groups
  • Provide administrative support for scientific collaborations and track status of new and existing agreements

Outcomes Reporting

  • Export and prepare data for study staff upon request
  • Monitor network metrics and post updates on UDN public website
  • Prepare internal reports for network sites to track progress and key outcomes
  • Generate reports on network progress and resource utilization (e.g. sequencing) for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Program Staff and external stakeholders
  • Create public-facing reports and post on UDN public website

Technology

  • Collaborate with CC team members to improve technology workflows
  • Manage user permissions and access to the UDN central database
  • Manage application assignment algorithm and collaborate with UDN CC team members to communicate changes to the network
  • Provide support in planning and testing changes made to the UDN central database
  • Contribute to maintenance and updating of public UDN website

Communications

  • Triage data sharing inquiries
  • Communicate with UDN clinical sites and cores about data entry

Although this is primarily a coordination and administrative role, the Data Coordinator will gain extensive experience in research operations and have the ability to take on additional responsibilities over time.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies:

  • Familiarity with NIH public databases, especially ClinVar, dbGaP, and AnVIL, is preferred
  • Experience or willingness to learn about handling genome and exome data is also preferred
  • Experience working with clinical and/or research datasets
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Ability to consistently meet all deadlines for deliverables or activities
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare as well as genetics a plus

Basic Qualifications

Five or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count toward experience.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific- or data-related field preferred

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
