Summary of Job Duties:

The cytotechnologist works under the direct supervision of the Cytology Supervisor and the Medical Director to ensure that specimens are processed, screened, diagnosed, and signed out adhering to the highest standard of patient care. The cytotechnologist has many essential responsibilities that require decision making skills and independent judgment. These skills and the cytotechnologist’s decision making authority are crucial for accurate and excellent patient care.
• Screens conventional and Thin Prep pap tests according to CLIA 1988.
• Results conventional and Thin Prep pap tests as “Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy” without referral to the cytopathologist according to CLIA 1988 and The Bethesda System.
• Identifies and marks (screens) epithelial cell abnormalities, microorganisms, and reactive changes on screening and diagnostic pap tests and refers all non-negative and reactive cases to staff cytopathologists.
• Screens non-gynecologic samples for evidence of pre-malignant or malignant conditions or inflammatory responses to a specific microorganism and refers all non-gynecologic cases to the attending cytopathologist.
• Regularly reviews and renders a diagnosis on fine needle aspiration (FNA) cases and forwards them to the attending cytopathologist.
• Documents daily workload and records statistics of cases screened and time spent on other responsibilities.
• Documents all screening records, calculates percentages sent for rescreen and review, and records and reviews any 2-step discrepancies between original and final diagnosis. Data is submitted monthly to lab supervisor.
• Participates in interlab comparison programs in Gyn and Non-Gyn cytology.
• Assists with specimen collection and preparation by special procedures, (ultrasound guided and CT guided), and FNA’s performed by clinicians other than cytopathologists.
• Covers all responsibilities of the cytology laboratory support technician when they are absent.
• Covers all responsibilities of administrative personnel when they are absent.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications (Essential for the job – the applicant must possess at the time of hire)

  • Baccalaureate Degree in Cytotechnology
  • ASCP certified Cytotechnologist
  • ThinPrep certification

Preferred Qualifications (Non-essential for the job –the applicant may possess at the time of hire) 

  • Per CAP regulations: must have at least three years of experience as a full time cytotechnologist to be qualified as a supervisory level cytotechnologist defined by CLIA 88 guidelines.
  • Gyn, Non-Gyn, FNA screening experience preferred.
