The electricity network serves as the interface between distributed generation, active demand and local flexibility market, and digital substations are enablers for the network power flow to be controlled and directed safely and securely. However digital substations are highly attractive targets for cyber-attackers aimed at disrupting operations. This project aims to build and demonstrate an integrated cyber defence (ICD) platform to provide essential cyber-safe and resilient functions for the highly digitised cyber-physical energy network required for the UK future net zero energy network. The project will use AI and ML technologies to build dual defence systems against advanced cyber threats. The scopes of the project are firstly to build an automatic cyber Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to protect the electricity network against known or advanced cyber-attacks, and then to develop an AI-based cyber Intrusion Response/Defence System (IRDS) for the electricity network PAC devices and SCADA systems against malicious control of circuit breaker actions.
