CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of
Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. One Cultural Resources Technician (Full-time, 40 hours/week) position not to exceed one year) is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide training and experience on a range of cultural resource projects supporting the 611 Civil Engineer Squadron (CES) cultural resources management program at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Anchorage. Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

The Cultural Resources Technician will support the 611 CR team by conducting historical military research on World War II, Cold War, and Pacific history, including material culture. The position requires travel to Alaska archives, universities, and other historical sites to conduct necessary research. The technician will also assist in National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) processes, including consultation, identifying historic properties, and creating Section 110 and 106 documentation for submission to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Additional travel to Eareckson Air Station and Wake Island Air Station may be required.

The 611 CES is stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska. JBER is a 79,000-acre United States (U.S.) military installation near Anchorage, Alaska. In 2010, JBER was created when Elmendorf Air Force Base and the U.S. Army’s Fort Richardson were merged. The U.S. Air Force mission of JBER is to provide tactical support and training for worldwide air sovereignty, combat, and strategic airlift missions. The JBER cultural resources team is responsible for managing and promoting the preservation of historic sites on the installation. The team is responsible for many archaeological sites and historic buildings around JBER that offer unique views of the past, including Nike Site Summit, a Cold War era missile defense system listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and open to public tours.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• Must be familiar with history of World War II in the Pacific
• Strong independent research skills, including experience with archives, universities, and history offices
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe programs
• Ability to operate federal vehicles, including cars and ATVs
• Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
