Description
The Great Basin Institute seeks a dynamic professional to engage in project management and implementation for a series of intensive archaeological pedestrian surveys and site recording on post-wildfire burned landscapes, for which accessibility and visibility of such a landscape are unique. The Project Manager/Crew Chief will oversee and ensure completion of archaeological survey, to include fieldwork, site recordation and technical report writing. The Project Manager/Crew Chief will supervise a crew of archaeologists and will keep and record field notes describing field conditions, terrain and vegetation, and cultural resources. The Project Manager/Crew Chief will ensure archaeological sites are documented and recorded appropriately in accordance with Forest Service standards on current archaeological forms and that geospatial data is consistently and properly recorded for sites and survey areas. The Project Manager/Crew Chief will prepare technical reports summarizing the results of surveys.

The Cultural Resources Project Manager/Crew Chief will facilitate the recruitment, selection, on-boarding, and management of up to a five-person archaeological field team. The incumbent will provide day-to-day oversight of field personnel and serve as a liaison between the field crew and GBI and Sierra NF personnel. The Project Manager/Crew Chief will work closely with the Sierra National Forest Heritage Program regarding overall project management and survey progress. This position provides an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking experience with a federal land management agency and/or with interest in fire effects and fire restoration planning.

Qualifications
Education: Incumbent must have completed at least one academic year of graduate level education in anthropology or archaeology or have the equivalent training and experience; Completion of Master’s degree, preferable.

Certification: Register of Professional Archaeologists, preferable.

Experience: Minimum two years of professional experience and/or specialized training in archaeological fieldwork. This experience shall have included work in California, with at least some of that time spent in the Sierra Nevada dealing with sites associated with prehistoric period and historic sites typical of the region (e.g. logging railroads and linear features, mining sites, homesteading sites, work camps). Experience in the identification and recording of sites is critical.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

Prehistoric and historic archeology of the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, including logging railroads and linear features, mining sites, homesteading sites, work camps;
Common archaeological feature types and artifacts (prehistoric and historic) found in the Sierra Nevada
Cultural resources protection and stewardship practices;
State and federal antiquities laws;
Natural resources protection and stewardship practices; and
Environmental assessment, NEPA/CEQA statutes, and impact statements.
