BASIC FUNCTION:
Develop, implement, and oversee training programs in support of the Metcalf Institute’s goal of centering equity, inclusion, and intersectional perspectives in science communication. Build and sustain strong working relationships with Metcalf Institute partners within URI and the wider community. Develop new partnerships and collaborate with existing partners to support and expand Metcalf’s training and communities of practice within journalism and inclusive science communication.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborate with the Metcalf Institute team to plan, implement, and evaluate programs, including but not limited to the fee-based training, grant-funded workshops and seminars, public lectures and webinars, and conferences including the Inclusive SciComm Symposium.
Develop, coordinate, and expand the Institute’s training programs to engage various audiences in the practice of inclusive science communication.
In collaboration with the Metcalf team, assess the leading edge of the inclusive science communication landscape to inform Metcalf Institute strategies and projects.
Connect with researchers and practitioners across a diversity of fields, attending and/or representing Metcalf Institute at relevant conferences, and reviewing the relevant scientific literature.
Organize and/or conduct training programs in multiple modalities: in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online. Revise and adapt training programs to meet stakeholder and/or partner needs while assessing outcomes and impact.
Write and/or contribute to proposals to seek external financial support for Metcalf Institute programs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with Metcalf Institute staff to assign and supervise URI student assistants and interns in tasks related to and in support of program research, development, implementation, and evaluation.
Perform additional duties as needed.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management. Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Asana.
Required QualificationsREQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree.
2. Minimum of three years of experience in journalism, communications, and/or training and development.
3. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
5. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
6. Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
8. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
9. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Preferred QualificationsPREFERRED:
1. Demonstrated background in or familiarity with climate and environmental issues.
2. Demonstrated experience as a science communication practitioner and/or trainer.
3. Demonstrated experience and dedication to integrating issues of inclusion, equity, social justice and accessibility in your work.
4. Demonstrated experience with project and/or program development and management.
5. Demonstrated experience with proposal writing.
6. Demonstrated experience with program evaluation of communication activities.
7. Demonstrated experience using evaluation tools, surveys, and navigating IRB protocols.
8. Demonstrated experience with asynchronous online program delivery.
