Conversation Partner – English Immersion Program

Seeking several English conversation partners (CPs) for a three-week, in-person

English Immersion Summer program for international students. English conversation partners lead small groups of students in language activities and outings in Montreal. Conversation partners are proficient in English (although not necessarily native English speakers), enjoy exploring the city, and are familiar with the public transportation system. CPs should be available on weekday afternoons to animate activities and lead outings while maximizing speaking opportunities for the visiting international students.

Typical functions:

  • Animate Spontaneous Conversations
  • Lead/elicit planned discussion tasks
  • Guide groups to outing destinations on public transit
  • Assist students or lead Conversation Partner with buying tickets /supplies / or meals
  • Guide tours of campus / downtown
  • Interact with destination guides / animators to help facilitate communication/ learning
  • Responsible for collecting / returning receipts
  • Animate games / activities / outings
  • Encourage participation
  • Report on participation / giving feedback on activity success

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Strong interpersonal skills – must be outgoing, willing to engage and initiate conversations with students. Must be able to adapt quickly to situations. Extremely reliable and punctual. Involvement in the McGill or Montreal community (clubs, services, athletics, or other university activities or special talents (music, sports, etc.) are assets.

Days: 5 days during the week

Times: afternoons, 12:30 – 3:30 (subject to slight changes)

Total hours: 15-17 hours per week per position (possible weekend work as well for out of town

excursions)

Program dates: May 6 to May 24, 2024

Remuneration: $18 / hour
