Who are we?

The British Embassy in Spain is part of a global network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now recruiting for a Consular Officer position to based in Málaga.

Main purpose of job:
With over 400,000 British residents and 18 million British visitors annually, Spain is the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s highest volume consular operation globally. The selected candidate will form part of the Spain consular team, which operates across eight consulates. Whilst they will cover mainly Andalucía, Ceuta and Melilla casework, providing consular assistance at a national level will also be part of the role. Occasional in-person resilience to other consulates across Spain may also be requested.
Full induction and training will be provided to the successful candidate.

Roles and Responsibilities:

You will provide frontline consular assistance in a high-volume environment, managing complex and often sensitive casework. Situations may include hospitalisations, bereavements, detentions and supporting victims of serious crime.
You will work closely with colleagues across Spain and with local Spanish authorities and organisations to ensure effective and compassionate support.

Casework & Consular Support:

  • Deliver high-quality consular assistance to vulnerable British nationals in complex and sensitive circumstances
  • Visiting patients and providing support to families in distress in cases of serious hospitalisation;
  • Providing empathetic advice and support to bereaved families, including in cases of murder, suicide or violent/accidental deaths, accompanying to the funeral director/mortuary as required;
  • Visit detainees and provide appropriate advice and support;
  • Support victims of sexual assault, including accompanying them to hospital, police or court.

Operational Delivery:

  • Travel across the region (including outside Málaga) to provide in-person assistance, sometimes at short notice, out of hours, or with overnight stays
  • Support crisis response for incidents affecting large numbers of UK nationals (e.g. wildfires, flooding, major accidents)

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Liaise with local Spanish stakeholders including police, courts, social services, healthcare providers, charities and local authorities
  • Build effective working relationships to support vulnerable individuals

Projects & Prevention Work:

  • Contribute to the Spain-wide prevention strategy by engaging stakeholders and supporting evaluation of impact
  • Assist with delivery of projects and change initiatives, including data collection, reporting and progress tracking
  • Support the development and updating of digital guidance and resources

Administrative Support:

  • Issue Emergency Travel Documents to British nationals
  • Provide general office support, including organising meetings and events

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (minimum at a C2 level of the CEFR*);
  • A full valid driving licence in Spain;
  • Minimum 1 to 3 years’ experience supporting customers in traumatic or difficult circumstances (social work, welfare, or support-focused environment);
  • Ability to work at pace and prioritise, managing an often-heavy workload;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Good IT skills (Microsoft Office), experience working with CRM will be an advantage;
  • Excellent communication, customer service skills and interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with colleagues in Spain, Wider Europe Network and the UK;
  • Ability to liaise with external stakeholders and manage a range of relationships;
  • Attention to detail, strong analytical perspective and problem solving skills.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Nice to have:

  • University degree.
  • Knowledge of the tourist industry in Andalucía.
  • An understanding of the issues that British nationals in Spain may face, both visitors and residents.
  • Knowledge of Salesforce and Co-Pilot.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

Please be advised that Consular positions at the FCDO entail dealing with crisis and casework in situations that may involve death, detention, rape, assault, post-mortems, prison visits and highly distressed customers. Candidates should therefore have a high level of resilience to trauma.

This is a full-time, permanent contract at AO grade level, based in Malaga.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

Working patterns: Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.00am to 16:00pm from Monday to Friday.

Learning & Development: We offer time and financial support for the successful candidate to take advantage of professional learning and development opportunities inside and outside of the organisation. All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.
