Brief Position Overview The Enterprise Services Group is a unit within University Information Technology and is responsible for technical support of all major computer-based administrative applications for the four-campus MSU system. MSU uses Ellucian Banner Enterprise Resource Planning software, running on an Oracle database, for most of its administrative tasks. Primary modules include Human Resources (HR), Finance, Student, and Financial Aid. In addition to payroll processing, key Finance operations include areas such as benefits, position control, and budgeting.
The Finance Lead Systems Analyst supports Banner Finance users across all four MSU campuses as well as integrated third party systems from a technical perspective.

Position Details

General Statement In support of the Montana State University mission, University Information Technology promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources. The Enterprise Services Group is responsible for technical support of all major computer-based administrative applications for the four- campus MSU system. MSU uses Ellucian Banner Enterprise Resource Planning software, running on an Oracle database, for the majority of its administrative tasks. Primary modules include Human Resources (HR), Finance, Student, and Financial Aid. In addition to payroll processing, key HR operations include areas such as benefits, position control, and budgeting.
Under the supervision of the Director for Enterprise Services, the Finance Lead Systems Analyst performs professional level work implementing and supporting the on-going operations for the Ellucian Banner Finance information system and for related non-Ellucian systems used with the Finance information systems across the four-campuses of Montana State University.
Duties and Responsibilities The Finance Lead Systems Analyst will:
  • Collaborate directly with the Business Analysts and the Finance functional users.
  • Identify priority development and support efforts for the ERP system; and foster effective working relationships.
  • Provide systems analysis including assessing user requirements, analyzing alternatives, designing preferred solutions, specifying technical requirements, developing software modules, implementing solutions, and maintaining major software systems.
  • Manage projects and tasks associated with the development and maintenance efforts.
  • Coordinate technical problem resolution efforts.
  • Supervise technical staff in performing related duties.
  • Participate on joint efforts with other teams and committees that interface or interact with ERP or integrated systems.
  • Serve on other university committees providing leadership and technical counsel.
  • Hire, train, and manage the development staff of the Finance and Accounting Systems Team within the Enterprise Systems Group.
  • Document reports and process flows and create procedure manuals for areas of responsibility. Share knowledge of processes and systems with other department staff, pursue cross-training on responsibilities in other roles within the team.
  • Understand and system hardware and execute ordering process
  • Backup Agency Security in SABHRS & AssetWorx.
  • Systems and Data Analysis – Data analysis and troubleshooting and serve as lead technical analyst for appropriate Ellucian Banner ERP Finance & AR Module(s) or sub-module(s). Detailed knowledge of finance processes & data and high-level computer engineering skills and proficiency with PL/SQL, PERL, Java, PHP, Python, etc. Primary programmer for identifying and resolving issues in the state interface and daily chain. Be the expert on State Interface code and processes in AppWorx for the Daily Chain for Finance and AR process. Continue to update documentation on any changes with a living document for the AppWorx Daily Chain.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Systems Analysis & design skills.
  • Relevant knowledge of the relational database structure.
  • Communication skills to collaborate with stakeholders regarding current processes and risk mitigation.
  • Knowledge of ERP systems or enterprise applications. Use SQL or other modern programming languages to create process efficiencies and improvements. Train new employees and collaborate with other in many departments on processes.
  • Software Development best practices.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Versed in PL/SQL Development.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems relating to finance, accounting and/or student data.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the operating systems used on the MSU campus including UNIX variants and Windows Operating Systems.
  • Demonstrated work experience requiring knowledge of Banner and Oracle technical architectures.
  • Experience integrating third-party systems with enterprise applications.

    • Demonstrate excellent, professional verbal and written communication skills. Exercise initiative and independent judgment in solving complex problems and in interpreting and applying policies and procedures.
