Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Chemical Sciences Division has an opening for a Solar Photochemistry Postdoc to join the team.
The Houle group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) focuses on multiscale reaction-diffusion modeling of complex chemical systems, connecting first principles theory and molecular level experimental measurements of chemical reactivity to macroscopic observables. We seek to discover fundamental processes that control and influence how spatially distributed systems react, with an emphasis on nanoscale, photodriven reactivity. We are seeking applicants to develop detailed coupled reaction-transport stochastic kinetics models for sunlight-driven water oxidation on oxide semiconductor surfaces. We focus on the events that lead to O2 formation by 4 photogenerated holes, spanning charge carrier generation to chemical reaction timescales. These models will be built using theoretical and experimental data from the literature and collaborations, and will be foundational to future investigations of photoelectrocatalytic systems. Work done to date in this DOE BES-funded program has revealed the influence of the environment and the importance of rare, stochastic processes in controlling the chemistry of solar energy conversion. The new studies will build on these findings, focusing on the couplings of excitation, charge flow and interfacial chemical reactions across length scales of nm to many microns, and timescales from fs to sec. The temporally and spatially resolved characteristics of how photogenerated charge carriers control the water splitting systems will be used to point to opportunities to improve their efficiency.
