Computational PhD Student (f/m/x) in single-cell cancer genomics

Uniklinik Köln

Working at the University Hospital Cologne and the Medical Faculty means helping to shape the future – the future of medicine, of patients and, of course, your own future. You benefit from 59 clinics and institutes as well as numerous other departments and facilities and more than 10,000 jobs. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cologne and the University Hospital Cologne assume important social tasks in research, teaching and patient care. A close network with many university and non-university partners guarantees an internationally successful science and the excellent education of our students.

Institute for Computational Cancer Biology in the lab of Prof. Dr. Roland Schwarz

Our computational group is interested in understanding the role of chromosomal instability, somatic copy number alterations (SCNA) and chromatin structure in cancer evolution. We develop and apply algorithms for inferring and simulating cancer evolution and for haplotype reconstruction and phasing in close collaboration with our clinical and experimental partners. We are part of several national and international consortia, including the ICGCARGO and TRACERx consortia. Part of our group is also based at the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) at the TU Berlin. Regular visits to our partner site for scientific exchange are planned.

» Your tasks

You will be part of the SATURN3 project, a German-wide consortium part of the National Decade against Cancer initiative, which aims at targeting intra-tumour heterogeneity in three hard-to-treat cancers. You will leverage state-of-the-art single-cell DNA and RNA sequence data to investigate intra-tumour heterogeneity in its spatial and temporal context and contribute novel methodological advances to computational cancer genomics. You will work closely with an interdisciplinary and collaborative group of bioinformaticians, clinicians, and experimentalists, on a project with strong translational potential.

» Your Profile

Ideal candidates will have a Masters degree in Bioinformatics, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field, and a strong interest in quantitative and genetic research. Prior experience in single-cell or cancer genomics is a plus. Successful candidates will show a strong work ethic and should be enthusiastic about working in a highly interdisciplinary environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team are required.
