Computational Cosmology Postdoctoral Scholar

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Data Science Division has an opening for a Computational Cosmology Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

Applications are invited for the postdoctoral position in Berkeley Lab’s Computational Cosmology Center (C3), working on topics related to cosmological simulations and inference of cosmological parameters using simulations and observational data.

Interact with researchers from UC Berkeley departments are encouraged, especially involving Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics (BCCP) and Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS). Berkeley Lab is a full member of several cosmology surveys, including DESI, LSST, CMB-S4 as well as additional CMB experiments. Postdoctoral researcher will have access to allocations on some of the world-leading supercomputers including Perlmutter (Berkeley/NERSC), Polaris (Argonne/ALCF) and Summit (Oakridge/OLCF).

What You Will Do:

  • Statistical and machine learning methods for inferring cosmology from DESI and future sky surveys.
  • Surrogate modeling of expensive cosmological simulations and related research directions.
  • Generate your own research ideas.
  • Become an essential member of a diverse team of cosmologists, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists, working together on furthering cosmological simulations and parameter inference.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or equivalent/related field.
  • Publish and present research results in journals and conference proceedings.
  • Experience with numerical simulations and statistical and machine learning techniques.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work productively both independently and as part of a diverse team.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with High-Performance Computing in scientific context.

Requested Application Materials:
